The cultural work that I have chosen is the film, “The Color Purple”. This film is
a 1985 drama that was directed by Steven Spielberg but based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel
of the same name by Alice Walker. The film was based during the early 20th century, specially
the 1930s [CITATION Ann \l 1033 ] and follows the life of an African American teenager turned
woman named Celie living in rural Georgia. Throughout the film, Celie’s narrates her life’s
journey through the letters she writes to God. Throughout the film, she reads the letters and tells
of her experiences with oppression, poverty, gender inequality and the abuse she faces. In the
end, she finds strength and independence despite the strife she endured in her life.
The film “The Color Purple” belongs to the culture of the African American
community. It is considered a classic film in most black family households. The film explores
female liberation, the power of sisterhood and emphasizes the importance of family which are
very valuable to the culture of the African American community.
This film is an intense representation of the black culture and values of the
African American community. It depicts the experiences black women faced in the early 1930’s
and some experiences that women still endure today. The way the film shows the beauty and
strength of black culture is a indication to the prevailing power of the African American
community and its ongoing struggle for justice and equality.
This film helped deal with specific societal issues of the time by addressing and
shedding light on various important matters. It tackled several significant societal issues of the
time such as racial discrimination, segregation, sexual abuse, and gender inequality. This film
was also my first experience seeing LGBTQ+ Representation in a movie and it not be
condemned as often most films do. I believe this film told a
powerful story with compelling
characters and sparked important conversations about critical social issues that are still relevant
today.
