For this session, I chose to read Chapter 6: The Books of Poetry and Wisdom. In this chapter it listed the five books of poetry and wisdom: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs. These five books were written from the heart, and it shows throughout the prayers, poetry, and wise sayings written for us to reflect on in our own lives and to relate with as we grow a deeper relationship with God with the Wisdom and love He is showing throughout these books. While reading this chapter it touched on the themes of each of these books, which was taught early on, but it was nice to see them broken down in Knowing the Bible 101: Job- suffering and faith Psalms- our dependence on God for help, forgiveness, praise, and thanksgiving Proverbs- the practical consequences of wisdom and foolishness Ecclesiastes- the meaning of life Songs of Songs- the beauty and power of love (Bickel & Jantz,2003) Overall, these books offer each of us wisdom, understanding, and instruction. Each one of these books place us in different settings with God. Reading the Bible, you will see how Job takes us to God’s chambers or throne as he is suffering and holding onto his faith the entire time while in the book of Psalms, it is gathering us into God’s court of forgiveness, praise, and thanksgiving. Proverbs puts us in God’s classroom where He is teaching and instructing each one of His children and hoping we will refrain from our foolish ways. In Ecclesiastes, we are shown the vanity of living apart from God and learning the true meaning of life, and then there is the book Song of Songs or also known as Song of Solomon which takes us to the bridal room which allows us to rediscover the beauty and power of pure love. I could use each one of these five books and apply them to my past or present moment in life, but I will only choose a few. Job is a book I feel many of God’s children can relate to, I know it relates to myself from an early age. I was diagnosed with an aggressive case of Rheumatoid Arthritis, and it has been one of the hardest battles I have had to face. I have undergone several different forms of chemo to slow it down along with a few biologics and other failed medications. I am now currently on an infusion that I receive 2 times every 6 months and thankfully it has helped some. There are days when I am in unbearable pain and I just imagine the enemy is sitting next to me waiting for me to curse God, but I just keep reminding the enemy, that no matter the level of pain he wants to bestow on me, I will forever give God the glory and thank Him for always being with me even in these painful moments I may be enduring. My fiancé, Shawn also has related to Job. He was born with Alport’s Syndrome at the age of 12 and went on dialysis at 26. For 10 years he was on dialysis before he received his kidney. I could go on and on with so much we have endured over the 37 years that could relate to Job, but I also enjoy Psalms. I cite the Bible verse almost every day from the book of Psalms, “ The L ORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” (Holy Bible,
New International Version, 1973/2011, Psalms 23:1-4) This reminds me each day that the Lord protects and comforts me, and He will fill our days with blessings. He is always with me, and He will always provide for me, what more could I ask for? Lastly, Proverbs is a book my fiancé and I read a lot out of, and we try to relate it to what we are experiencing in that present moment as we are reading or studying the verse. One of my favorite verses from Proverbs is, “ Trust in the L ORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, Proverbs 3:5-6) This Bible verse reminds me daily to not rely on myself or anyone else around me and to trust in God. Letting go of what I think I know is right and allowing God to be in full control as He will guide me and pave the way for me go.
