HUM-100 3-2
Virtual Tour
The two cultural works that I chose are the Concord Coach from 1891 and the Sikorsky VS-
300A. I chose the Concord Coach as it comes from the region of New England that I grew up in. The coach itself is as the innovation of suspension allowed the coach to rock back and forth providing an easier run for both the horses that pulled it and the passengers or cargo. I chose the Sikorsky helicopter because I spent the eleven years of my life flying in the descendants of this early model. I have always been interested in helicopters even as a child but, it is amazing how far Sikorsky has come from its initial model to the behemoths that they create today.
Concord Coach: 1891 Abbot Downing Concord Coach - The Henry Ford
Sikorsky Helicopter: 1939 Sikorsky VS-300A Helicopter - The Henry Ford
Between the two cultural works, I believe they both reflected their time periods in the same way: innovations. The Coach differed from its predecessors by not only continuing the ability to transport passengers and cargo. But it was a carriage that was not only more comfortable but was
also better for the animals that pulled it across the terrain. This innovation was not only practical but also reflected the cultural shift in how people viewed horses and other animals. This shift was the mindset that these animals were not just beast to be used but animals to be protected and worthy of consideration during daily life. As for the helicopter, mankind has always been interested in aerial flight and as warfare changes and adapts the military application of a
helicopter were undeniable. From its initial application of aerial reconnaissance to the troop transport and attack platforms of today’s militaries. Sikorsky’s helicopters have had a lasting impact on the militaries across the globe. This helicopter was the first with a vertical tail rotor which is used to counteract the torque of the main rotor; this innovation forever changed how man built the flying machines we know as helicopters. Humanity since the earliest stories of Kain and Abel have been developing new and innovative ways to kill each other. In 1939, humanity took just one more step towards that age old end.
What does the Sikorsky helicopter show us about the intention of man? To find an answer to this question, I would need to consult and research a variety of psychologists and inventors. The questions to be asked would be what motivates man to invent or innovate? What motivates man to use technology in such a way that it can cause irreversible damage to people both physically and mentally? Another place I could go to is the Sikorsky factory in Bridgeport, Connecticut and
get firsthand accounts from engineers and designers on why they do what they do.
