Statement of Intent
My main objective as an educator is to establish a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel motivated, supported, and empowered to reach their utmost potential. I firmly believe that education should surpass the mere transmission of knowledge and instead concentrate on nurturing critical thinking abilities, creativity, and a lifelong passion for learning. Reflecting this philosophy, John Dewey once declared that "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself" (Dewey, 1916). This statement deeply resonates with me because it underscores the significance of connecting education to students' lives in a relevant and meaningful way. By linking curriculum content to real-life experiences and offering
opportunities for hands-on learning, my aim is to engage students in active exploration and discovery. My personal frames of reference have not changed based on my field experience and
other activities in this course. Your State Department of Education Requirements for Certification
In Louisiana, all teachers are obligated to possess a bachelor's degree, fulfill a teacher preparation program specific to the state of Louisiana, and pass the relevant Praxis exams (Louisiana Department of Education, n.d.). The state employs a tiered licensing system. Meeting
the basic requirements grants educators eligibility for a Level 1 Professional Certificate. By completing the Louisiana Teacher Assistance and Assessment Program (LATAAP) and successfully teaching for three years, teachers can progress to the Level 2 Professional Certificate (Louisiana Department of Education, n.d.).
For those seeking the highest certificate, the Level 3 Professional Certificate, they must earn a master's degree and teach for at least five years (Louisiana Department of Education, n.d.). To facilitate this process, Louisiana offers the Master's Degree Alternate Certification Program. This initiative allows candidates to teach full-time while simultaneously pursuing a master's degree and receiving teacher preparation. Candidates interested in this program must
maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 and pass appropriate Praxis exams (Louisiana Department of Education, n.d.).
After meeting these initial requirements, candidates may apply to an approved provider of master's degree programs. Once admitted into such a program, candidates can apply for the Practitioner License 3 (PL3) and begin teaching while working towards their master's degree. Upon successful completion of this comprehensive program, candidates will not only obtain a master's degree but also be granted a Level 3 Professional License (Louisiana Department of Education, n.d.). As stated by the Louisiana Department of Education: "The Master’s Degree Alternate Certification Program allows individuals who meet admissions criteria to teach full-time in an accredited public or nonpublic school while completing coursework leading to certification" (n.d., p. X).
Professional Organization for Professional Development
One professional organization related to special education that may help facilitate my ongoing personal and professional development
is The National Association of Special Educators. The NASET is dedicated to meeting the needs of special educators. Another organization that I believe will be helpful on my journey is the CEC. It is the driving force behind all things within the special education community.
