The Necklace: Put yourself in her shoes: would you have hidden the truth if you lost something valuable of your friend's? Do you sympathize or feel Mathilde deserves her situation for trying to pretend she's something she's not? Explain.
Reading the story, The Necklace. I was in shock about the ending when Madame Forestier explained the necklace was an imitation and not a real diamond. Throughout my
reading I do believe that Mathilde should have told her friend the truth once she realized she lost her jewelry. Putting myself in Mathilde shoes, if I were to lose something valuable of my friends I would come forward and try to come to a solution together on how I could fix the issue. If this is a true friend, they will forgive you and understand everyone makes mistakes. Mathilde tried her best to make up for the loss of the “diamond” and worked extremely hard to pay off her debt. When Madame Forestier stated “Oh, my poor Mathilde! But mine was imitation” (May, 3). I believe she realized she should’ve told the truth to begin with. In the end I believe our actions have consequences and how we handle them is on ourselves. 2.
Everyday Use: Why does Wangero want artifacts from Mama’s home? Do you agree with her motivations? Explain.
Wangero wanted artifacts from Mama’s house because of the sentimental value from her grandmother. The old quilts like Wangero stated “These are all pieces of dresses Grandma
used to wear. She did all this stitching by hand” (May, 4). I do agree with her motivations
of wanting a piece of memory to have of her grandmother as I have experienced this same feeling. However, sharing with other family members is important as well as coming to an agreement so this does not upset anyone. If there is not enough to share since these items are very valuable, everyone could take a turn throughout the family. Citation
