Clinical Field Experience C: Observing Co-Curricular Lessons
During this week’s observation, I had the privilege and opportunity to mentor Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Kelly Wescott. We are still in the safety month, now October which still incorporates community helpers. We are preparing to go on our first field trip of the year to the fire station tomorrow so kids can see a real fire house and what they do for their job. I absolutely love weeks like this when students are engaged within their learning and are relating to jobs of their parents or guardians. Mrs. Wescott incorporates within her lesson youtube videos on community helpers, on the promethean board she has slides that involve students to come to the board and do games. They also incorporated a song that goes along with the tune of “I’m a little tea pot.” The song goes like I’m a little firefighter on the go. Here is my helmet. Here is my hose.
When I see a fire, hear me shout “Turn on the water and put the fire out!” Shhhhhhhh On this part the students get to pretend they are holding a hose, while they are saying shhhhh like their water is on and they are putting a fire out. When it came to story time, Mrs. Wescott would ask the students about different community helpers just to see what they already knew. As they would go reading the book and Mrs. Wescott giving clues, she would ask the students, “Who Am
I?” the students would then guess what community helper she was talking about within the book.
She also had a slide on the promethean board that displayed the community helper, with their name under their picture to show students the different heroes within our community that are big helpers. In relation to this she led to important jobs as students within the classroom that the students have every day. After large group discussion, the students were divided into their color groups to do their work. The groups worked on finding their popcorn words within their poem/song and coloring their firetruck on the back of their page. Once students were done completing their work, everyone joined one another back on the rug to transition into their center
time. While observing the students, I loved hearing them try to sing the new firefighter song that
they just learned moments before. They all worked together to complete the song by taking turns and helping one another. I had the view of a wonderful musical performance. After centers, the kids would come back to the rug to dance to songs about community helpers, play games to where they were on a timer and have to name that community helper before the board gave the answer. During this time students are using the restroom, washing their hands, and preparing to walk to the cafeteria for lunch. Furthermore, the students come back to the room rest their belly from lunch, and we go into math for the afternoon. They are currently working on ten frames on identifying numbers and putting that many dots in the frame to represent that number. Once completed with this the students transition back to the rug, get their folders to pack up for the day
to go home. I absolutely love observing and seeing all the cute activities teachers do with their students. The amount of growth these students gain by fun games but still learning at the same time is amazing.
