BIB101A - Session 2 – Discussion 1. What is your reaction to the fact that God continually works with his people, even when they refuse to obey? It shows God’s love for human beings is unconditional and unchanging (consistent) and his commitment towards his people regardless of our actions or behavior. God was still there for his people. I am grateful for a forgiving God. 2. Why is it important to read the Bible as on book with one major story arc rather than only as a collection of books and unrelated stories? Be thorough. Reading the Bible as one book with one central story is essential because it helps us understand the Bible's authority and our identity as God’s people and counter other meta stories that are complete for our allegiance. So, the story begins with: In the video lecture titled “Reading the OT Meta narrative” (One Big Story), Dr. Joe Slunaker talked about four parts of how it all fit into one big story: Creation, Fall, and Redemption In the Creation (Gen. 1-2), God speaks things into existence; at the height of His Creation, He created in His image; the only thing He created is humanity , and human beings are created unique. The Fall (Gen. 3-11) , God gave human beings two commands, one positive, “to be fruitful and multiply,” and one negative, “do not eat of this specific tree in the garden that he made for them.” Our original humans, Adam and Eve, disobeyed God, entered into rebellion, and unfortunately infected all successive humanity with the consequences of sin, which is death. Redemption (Gen. 12 and beyond) : God does not leave humanity without hope, even in that first phase. He gives hope to Adam and Eve, and then, in that division between Gen. 11 and Gen. 13, God, through Abraham, starts a significant cycle of redemption that culminates in something extraordinary; the New Testament makes the case that Jesus is the culmination of Abraham’s story. New Creation (Revelation): Once again, we see that from a biblical perspective, history is heading toward something, and a new creation is the solution to sin. 3. Choose one of your favorite stories (it can be biblical but does not have to be). Choose one part of the story and tell it in three sentences, but do not give any context, background, or any supplementary information. When you read other
posts, figure out what stories your classmates are writing about. Is this an effective way to tell stories? One of my favorite stories in the Bible is that, overall, this story gives hope and points to Jesus Christ. Firstly , it shows how God’s sovereignty works in human decisions and gives us a picture of His glory at work. Secondly , the sexual nature of humanity was shown through character. Thirdly , the gospel of God’s mercy for the undeserved is exhibited in the story.
