Interview Script First, thank you for taking the time to talk with me today. As you may already know, my name is Mariana, and I am a doctoral student at Concordia University Chicago. I am here to talk to you about how you perceive and understand your experiences with education and educative processes. I will be asking you a series of questions. I want to understand things from your perspective. There are no right or wrong answers to any of the questions so please be as honest as possible. You will not offend me in any way so please speak freely. Do you have any questions or comments so far? To ensure that I accurately report your views, with your permission, I would like to audio record our conversation. I have prepared a consent form for you to review and sign. This recording will be transcribed so your name will be removed, and the information collected will be kept confidential. If at any point you want to take a break or stop the interview, please just let me know. Any questions before we begin? Let’s get to it! Sub-question In what ways do K-5 special education teachers perceive and understand their experiences with education and educative processes? Interview Guide 1. Can you describe your background and experience as a special education teacher? What led you to choose this field of education? 2. In your training, where there any specific classes that addressed classroom and/or behavior management?
3. What are some professional development experiences and additional trainings you have attended to support and/or enhance your behavior management skills? Have they been effective/which have been more effective than others? 4. What challenges have you encountered in your role as a K-5 special education teacher, and how have you addressed them? 5. In your experience, what kind of support and resources do K-5 special education teachers need to be effective in their roles? 6. How do you collaborate with other professionals (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists, counselors) to support students with behavior challenges? Are there any challenges to collaborating with other professionals? If so, what are they? 7. Inclusion is a key aspect of special education. How do you promote the inclusion of students with behavioral challenges in general education settings? 8. How do you stay up-to-date with the latest research and best practices in behavior management for students with special needs? 9. What are your thoughts on the impact of legislation and policies on special education programs, and how have they influenced your work? 10. What advice would you give to someone considering a career in special education, based on your own experiences?
