Patrick Tunis HUM 100 Professor Johnston January 29, 2023 4-2 Project Draft In my analyzation of the 20 th century, I have come across a cultural work, in the form of a poem titled “The Cold Within” by James Patrick Kinney. This poem was creating in the 1960s, which was a time where racial discrimination was at an all time high and the civil rights movement was in full swing. This poem reflected on how people of different races, religions, and economic statuses viewed each other in a negative way, and how these views could cause them to perish. This cultural work allowed me to dive deeper into the impact of situations that surround the authors or creators of such works. I believe that, in the instance of The Cold Within, Mr. Kinney viewed a world in which people chose to dislike one another based on external factors. He wanted to show the world how these actions could lead to pain. The story he crafted within his poem eloquently painted this picture. It is my belief that this display of creative expression is necessary in our world, as it allows us to show how things that happen in our lives can effect more than just us. While exploring the relationship between culture and expression, I would ask about the effect of cultural works on the world. How have these cultural works changed the world? In what ways have these poems, speeches, or works of art inspired others to become the change? I plan to
look at the time period in which The Cold Within was created to what impact this cultural work had on those who read it. This poem has also caused me to look within myself. In what ways are what I believe in impacted by the stories I’ve read, or the works of art I’ve seen? How can a cultural work change the way I perceive a certain topic? And, most importantly, how can I use that impact or change in perception, moving forward? I believe that, in order to fully explore these questions, I would need to look at my past actions as well as how this current cultural work has made me feel or changed my beliefs.
