NBST 610: Exam 1
Short Answer:
1.
List and define Origen’s three elements in an allegorical interpretation
a.
Literal (body)
b.
Spiritual (spirit)
c.
Ethical/moral (soul)
2.
List and briefly describe the three reasons for the practice of proper hermeneutics
according to Klein et al
a.
To discern God's message. A careful system of hermeneutics provides the
means for the interpreter to arrive at the text's intention, and more
importantly to understand what God intended to communicate through
human minds and hands (both illocution and perlocution). Found on page 63.
b.
To avoid or dispel misconceptions of erroneous perspectives and conclusions
about what the Bible teaches. Correct interpretation undermines erroneous
teachings that people use to support aberrant beliefs and behavior. An
example of this is withholding medical intervention for children because with
the best of motives of the parent, they believe they should trust God for
healing. Found on page 63.
c.
To be able to apply the Bible's message to our lives. The Bible speaks to us
univocally, though it was written to ancients, many of its features remain the
same (human existence, the realities of angels, demons, God, Jesus as God's
Son, and forgiveness on the basis of Jesus' name). Found on page 64.
3.
List and briefly describe the steps in doing a proper word study in a passage.
a.
Select words that require detailed analysis. This can be words that are
difficult, crucial, theologically loaded, rare or figurative.
b.
Determine the range of meaning for the word. This requires research in
lexicons to determine the various meanings of a word.
c.
Select the meaning that best fits the context. After conducting research on the
possible meanings of a word, one must select the best fit for the passage. The
context is the single most significant determiner of the meaning of a word or
phrase.
