Name 3 cultures you are a part of (for example, I am a part of several cultures: Catholic upbringing, practicing Protestant, Southern, female, nerd, educator, Irish-American, Italian-American, college graduate, etc.). For each of your cultures, using both your own experience and examples from the text sections 3-3 - 3-3g (How Cultures Differ), describe the characteristics of your culture. I am part of several cultures but one of the most obvious cultures I'm a part of is the White-American culture. At one point in time, White-American culture was known as the dominant culture in the United States. The textbook defines a dominant culture as “the learned system of norms held by the majority group of empowered people in a society” (3-2 Dominant Cultures, Co-Cultures, and Cultural Identity). Another culture I am a part of is the female culture. Female characteristics include women are accustomed to being “nurturing, caring, and service-oriented and value those traits as much as performance, ambition, and competitiveness” depending on the circumstances of a situation as mentioned in the text (3-3f Masculinity/Femininity). Lastly, I am a part of the Christian upbringing. The Christian upbringing focuses on God, loving others, and the Bible. Include any stereotypes people believe about your cultures. Do the stereotypes seem true? How harmful are they? White American culture has been connected to mostly negative characteristics such as entitlement, supremacy, and privilege. In fact, I believe those characteristics are also the stereotypes associated with White American culture. I believe many White Americans are perceived as inherently wealthy, powerful, and privileged. Although this may be true for some White Americans, I can easily say that these stereotypes are not true for myself. Females are often stereotyped as weak, helpless, and quiet. These stereotypes are extremely harmful as they give the impression that women are less than men when it comes to being strong, assertive, and intelligent. Christians are often stereotyped as being extreme in their views such as being against same-sex marriage, being against abortion, always pushing to convert others, and being judgmental of different cultures. These stereotypes are not only harmful but unfair to those, like me, who believe love is love, abortion is a choice, you don't have to go to church to be a Christian and everyone is born in sin so no one sin is better or worse than another. Are your cultures subject to discrimination? If so, in what way?
In regard to discrimination, personally, I believe any and all cultures are subject to discrimination. There is always the possibility that someone from another culture finds it necessary to discriminate against another culture for any possible reason. Do you find yourself code-switching as a result of your culture? If so, describe how and when you code-switch. I do often find myself code-switching as a result of White American culture. I believe I code-switch when I am around people with an accent especially when I go on trips to other places and pick up on how they talk and their mannerisms. I do not find myself code-switching as a result of the female culture. I do not find myself code-switching as a result of my Christian upbringing either. How closely is your self-concept (refer to chapter 2 if you need a reminder about self-concept) tied to your culture? I believe most of my cultures influence my self-concept. When it comes to being a White Americans, I hear the negative things people say about white people, but it does not affect me. I am confident in the ways that I honor, accept, and encourage diversity along with standing up for those who face constant social injustices. I am a strong believer in equality for all people regardless of race, religion, or gender. Being a female and dealing with the stereotypes of being a female has oppositely impacted my self-concept. Instead of feeling weak, insecure, and helpless, I choose to feel strong, empowered, determined, and able to accomplish just about anything a man can do. Being a Christian has changed my self-concept. After accepting Christ as my Savior, I find myself feeling loved, worthy, and important. I also find myself spreading love and showing grace even in the most difficult of times.
