Hi everyone! Over the course of this class, I have learned many things about Indigenous and Native people. It has been a very informative course and we can use what we learned in real life in order to be more aware and supportive of Indigenous people. Some concepts I enjoyed learning and I believe to be important are the way Native Americans were portrayed in Hollywood and the missing Indigenous women. The way Native Americans were portrayed in Hollywood was dehumanizing and filled with stereotypes and prejudice. They were depicted as violent and referred to as savages while their white counterparts were portrayed as heroes who defeated said savages. Week 6 brought attention to the missing Indigenous women and gave an insight into the violence Native Americans are faced with in their communities. In the video “Canada's missing and murdered Indigenous women”, I learned that Indigenous women face a murder rate of six times the national average and that 1200 Indigenous women have been murdered or gone missing across Canada since 1980. Topics like these are important to learn and bringing awareness to the missing Indigenous women is something that is very important.
Bring up myth 15, called natives “anti-science” in order to display them as outdated and unsophisticated. (30 sec) Peace circle
Words that impacted me were "We don’t have mistakes, we just have happy accidents" by Bob Ross. I like that it shows beauty in messing up and how you can always find perfection in a mistake and create something new. This quote shows wisdom on how mistakes are not the end of the world and how we can always learn and be better.
