After having read Dante's Divine Comedy , take a look a Hieronymus Bosch's painting The Garden of Earthly Delights included in this week's module. Describe the similarities and differences between the two compositions. Support your analysis by quoting a fragment from the Divine Comedy and referring to a section from the image. Then, explain the symbolic impact of visualizing and verbally representing punishment by torture. Finally, argue why you agree or disagree with one of your classmates' comparative analysis and interpretation of punishment by torture by providing a convincing and developed rationale. Do not forget to add parenthetical information that includes the page of the ebook from which you extracted your quote following the format of the MLA style guidelines included in module SYLLABUS AND TEXTBOOK COURSE MATERIALS. (max. 20 pts. for correct MLA citation; max. 20 pts. for comparative analysis; max. 20 pts. for interpretation; 20 max. for reaction to one of your classmates' analysis; max. 20 pts. for correct grammar, spelling and punctuation) Various great works of art whether literary or via painting are seen having some type of connection. Many literary greats and famous artists have works that are often compared and contrasted as similarities can be seen in those works. Two such great works often compared and contrasted to each other are Dante’s Divine Comedy and Hieronymus Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights. These two represent writers and artists who have created timeless works still viewed as some of the best in the world. When looking at Dante’s Divine Comedy and Hieronymus Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights , it is easy to see some similarities between these two great works. Dante’s Divine Comedy is divided into three books characterizing a realm of the afterlife depicting the depths of an upper and lower Hell in Inferno, up the mountain of Purgatory in the Purgatorio and then through the high spheres of Heaven in the Paradiso (Puchner 926). Dante’s literature is considered to represent the evil and good of the world, the ultimate place of unrest for those who are evil, and the ultimate place of rest for those who are good. In Inferno, Dante
talks about the upper and lower parts of Hell. In The Garden of Earthly Delights, Hell is also represented in the right of the artwork. Dante’s Inferno goes through ten circles of Hell that are utterly chaotic with terrifying beasts and evil people. Where Dante uses words to describe the horrors of Hell, The Garden of Earthly Delights depicts horrible beasts and unimaginable acts in vibrant pictures. In Canto IX, Dante finds himself at the Gate of Dis the Capital of Hell. It is here that Dante sees a countryside like a vast cemetery of tombs of every size with lids lying beside them and wrapped in flames where all you could hear was the cries of anguish from the entombed dead (Puchner Canto IX 965). Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights depicts the similar scenes in the top right wing. Fire symbolic of death and the pain those in Hell experience are shown along with scenes of utter destruction and devastation just as Dante writes of in Inferno . It is clear to see that Bosch’s work portrays Dante’s writing of Hell, suffering, desolation, and destruction in picture form. When you see in picture form what someone was trying to convey with the written word, it gives you a better perspective and understanding of what the writer was trying to say. Pictures truly help a person to understand the magnitude of what a writers words are. References Puchner, Martin. Norton Anthology of World Literature: Shorter Fourth Edition. New York: W.W.
