The Olympics Olympics have their origin in the archaic period In the bronze age there is evidence of sport – there is evidence of children boxing with the Minoans and bull leaping evidence from Knossos. Death of Patroclus – Achillies organized games in honor of Patroclus. The Olympics arrived in the time of the hoplite phalanx, which promoted collaboration and equality between members. The Olympics may have been held to allow young rich men to get prestige through athletics. Cylon used his status as an Olympic winner to justify his tyranny. One the drawbacks of the individuality of the polies , could lead to complete alienation. Every four years the Greeks gathered in Olympia ( in the Peloponnesian peninsula) Olympic glory included immortality through their achievements. The Greeks kept papyrus lists of winners and the year would be known through them ( the year ___ won the race). Hippas of Eleians started the list , but noted that they were inaccurate. They marked the passage of time through the Olympics. The stadion was around 192.27 m and used stade to measure distance. Pindar the poet wrote poems about Olympics victors to keep their memory alive. Pind, ol – which included a tale where Hercules paced out the stadion and it was about 600 of his feet. T Pausanius -The Olympics prohibited women from participating or entering the stadium. Woman ( married woman) may mean that younger women may have been allowed. No woman was ever caught except for one, Kallipateria , who disguised herself as a trainer , trained her son and when her son won and when she jumped over and revealed herself , was sentenced to death but was spared because her dad, son and brother were Olympic victors. The trainers had to attend naked to assure there were no women. There is a woman's name on this list. A woman ( cynica) was listed as a winner from an equestrian event because the winner of the event was the owner, and the woman was spartan and was allowed to hold property. Heraea games Women were allowed to run – they wore short skirts, had their right shoulder bare and wore their hair down.
The way Greeks worshiped Zeus through athletic achievement. The Olympics were highly religious and the temple of Zeus at Olympia was very important. On the pediment , where sculptures were – where the victory of the gods over chaos ( shown by centaurs and monsters). This had a link to the colonialism of others. One of the seven wonders of the ancient world – the statue of Zeus at Olympia. He held Nike (victory goddess in his hands). Gymnasium – gymos means naked. The Spartans introduced being naked and oiling themselves up with olive oil. Later the kynodesme ( dogs leash) was introduced as a type of modesty and poets wore it too. The Greeks hated circumstances that were horrible and disgusting. The Greeks thought a small dick was bad and a small dick was good and civilized. The prize of the Olympics was a head wreath called stephantic , which was made of olive leaves. You can win all four crowns such as Lyon. The Olympic torch is a representation of sacrifices made to Zeus. The hecatomb was performed. The Hoplitodromos was an Olympic event where young men would run in hoplite armor. The Olympics originally were one race. They turned into other field events.
