Kramer 1 Cosmo Kramer Professor Jeannot ENC 1101 8 July 2014 Word Count: 771 The Effects of Daily Exercise Throughout my teens and twenties, I felt as though I was at the peak of my health. In fact, i sn’t everything supposed to go downhill physically once you hit middle age? I am in better shape at age forty-two than I have ever been. Changes in my exercise plan helped drastically, hav ing many surprising benefits. For example, I get sick less, experience fewer aches and pains, am stronger than I used to be, and most importantly, can keep up with my very energetic sons . Before I had the epiphany that I needed to take better care of myself physically. I was suffering from low energy, experiencing chronic aches and pains, and averaging about six head colds a year. In addition, I was dealing with the severe sleep deprivation that accompanies being a new parent. I spent my days bleary-eyed and unfocused, dragging myself through shifts at work and falling wearily into bed at night. Subsequently, I was grumpy and irritable with my family. My wife will readily corroborate this. Following this I talked it over with my brother, who is a certified trainer , and decided to prioritize exercise. Although it was challenging to carve time out of my hectic schedule to exercise, with the support of my family, I hit the gym at least three times a week. A few weeks later, I started noticing that I had fewer headaches and I had more energy. My back also stopped aching as a result of developing better core muscle strength.
Kramer 2 The stamina that I developed on the treadmill transferred to stamina to get through the workday. I soon began sleeping more soundly on the nights when my son wasn’t wailing every two hours. Committing to this made me stronger than I had ever been. Although this may be true, I could barely run half a lap on the track without wanting to collapse in the lane clutching the wind cramp in my side. A year later, I ran the 15K Gate River Run. At this time, I started doing planks, and I could barely hold one for thirty seconds. Now I can go for more than three minutes. In swimming, I was out of breath within ten minutes. Now I can do laps for an hour without even noticing that time is passing. My improvement over time is clear. I like it that I can look back to my 25-year-old self and know, without question, that I could kick his butt in any physical competition. The most profound effect of working out regularly has been on my relationship with my sons and the way I am able to play with them. When my older son was about three years old, I bought him a balance bike. This was an exercise in terror for me because he was so fast that I could not keep up with him. We would take him to the park. I would try desperately to run along with him to prevent him from careening off the paved path into the retention pond. I would be winded and red-faced, panting and nauseous. When he ran around at the beach, I would trot along after him, begging him to slow down. I regularly take my sons to the park and run along with them while they ride their bikes these days. I am faster than they are in races. I let them win (sometimes) because I try to be a good dad. I can lift them up to the monkey bars, and I can even cross the monkey bars myself. This has been the greatest effect of exercising. I have learned from first-hand experience that it is all too easy to make poor health choices that shorten lives and ruin health. I wasn’t overweight and I didn’t smoke. I considered myself healthy. It took the arrival of my first child, with his boundless energy and vigor, to make
Kramer 3 clear to me that health is relative. I might have seemed healthy compared to others my age, but I was no match for a toddler. I am proud to say that I can challenge any three-year-old to a test in stamina, which as any parent can tell you, is worth an Olympic medal.
