Two Days With Kobe and Hugo As an animal lover, I was excited when my Aunt Eboni asked me to watch her dog while she was out of town for a couple of days. Unfortunately, I soon realized that my dog, Hugo, was not as excited as I was to have a new guest in our home. Despite my efforts of trying to make them come together and get along well, the only emotion between them was tension. In this essay, I will describe what I observed from dogsitting my aunt’s dog, Kobe, for two days. I have never met Kobe in real life before his stay at my home. I had only seen pictures and videos of him. He was a black, medium-sized Labradoodle. From the stories my aunt and cousins have told me, their dog was just like any other Doodle. He was silly and got a case of the zoomies sometimes, but he also was cool, calm, and collected dog overall. He was not too much trouble, they assured me. Their dog however was the opposite of my dog. My dog, Hugo, is a small Chiuahaha, mixed tan dog, with white marks on his face and all four feet; as if he is wearing socks and gloves. Hugo’s daily routine consists of sleeping in late, eating a bunch of snacks given to him by my father, and also having a case of zoomies. He doesn’t do much, to say the least. Because of this, I thought there wouldn’t be too much of a conflict with Kobe coming to stay for a couple of days. Oh, how was I wrong. My Aunt Eboni rang my doorbell around 6:30 in the morning to drop off her dog. She said he was house-trained already and went to the restroom right before he came over. That was good to know. She handed me his leash and told me that she would be back the next night. No problem. After Kobe said “bye” to his mom, I let him into my home. I decided to keep his leash and collar on while giving him a tour of the house so I would feel more comfortable with being
able to be in control of where he was going. The first place I took him to was my backyard. I wanted to make sure he did not need to go to the restroom before continuing the rest of the tour. And just like I expected, he needed to go again. I also thought it was a good way to make him aware that another dog lives here as well. Kobe was outside for a good 15 minutes just smelling around everywhere. Mainly along the far left fence, I assume because that is where my dog marks his territory. Kobe was also made aware of the other dog in the neighborhood that lived next to us. Next on the tour was the kitchen. I showed him a corner where I was going to feed him for the next few hours. He just smelled all around and did end up finding some type of food to eat off of the ground. I then showed him the living room, the game room, and my room. He would be sleeping in my room, for the next two days, in my dog’s old crate. I didn’t trust him enough to sleep in my bed because Hugo sleeps in my bed every night. I decided to take off his leash and let him settle in. I waited a little bit and got all of his stuff settled in before I introduced him to my dog. After I found a place to put his stuff, I put him in the crate in my room and brought out my dog from his room. Hugo knew instantly that there was a new dog in his house and was not having it. He sprinted to the crate that Kobe was in and started going crazy. He was sniffing and grunting nonstop at him. Poor Kobe looked very friendly and excited to see Hugo, but it was the complete opposite feeling for Hugo. He was upset someone else was in his house, especially my room, and was showing off his little teeth while snarling. I yelled at him to stop and he stopped instantly. I told Hugo to go back to his room and he put his head down and slowly walked back to his room. After that incident, I knew that I couldn’t let Hugo anywhere near Kobe again for the remainder of his visit. For the rest of the day, I made sure Hugo stayed in his room away from Kobe. I let Kobe
roam around the house free for the rest of the day and just watched him. Kobe was basically like my own dog throughout the day. He slept all day and only woke up when it was time for him to eat. The confrontation with Hugo seemed to scare him a little bit, but after a couple of hours, I could tell he calmed down and became relaxed. He lay next to me on the couch and we just cuddled and watched Netflix for the rest of the day. When it was time for bed, he did sleep in the crate in my room. My dog ended up staying in his room for the night and did not sleep in my bed for the first time in months. I felt so bad, but it was what was safe. I could tell that Kobe staying over was putting a toll on my dog because Hugo was forced to stay in one room for the rest of the day. He was only allowed to come out when he had to go outside. But I knew there were only a couple more hours left of his visit, and he would be okay after he left. While Hugo would cry behind the door, Kobe just walked around like he had no care in the world. He had gotten very comfortable and didn’t even want to leave when my aunt came to pick him up. In conclusion, watching my aunt’s dog was more of a challenging experience than I anticipated. Even if it was for two days. I was not prepared for the conflict that came up between him and my dog. However, by observing both of their physical characteristics, behaviors, actions, and routine, I was able to determine the best way to go about the living situation for the past two days. Even though it was an unfortunate two days, I look back and am appreciative of the experience. This experience taught me the importance of patience, observation, and responsibility.
