Reflections on “Hispanic” Identity and Dia de los Muertos Hispanic Identity: "What it Means to be Latino" from: National Public Broadcasting Service, The American Family Series, www.pbs.org/americanfamily/latino.html, Last Updated: 2006 Dia de los Muertos: Dr. Ricardo Salvador, "What Do Mexicans Celebrate On The Day Of The Dead?" from Pp. 75-76, In Death And Bereavement In The Americas. Death, Value And Meaning Series, Vol. II. Morgan, J. D. And P. Laungani (Eds.) Baywood Publishing Co., Amityville, New York (2003), Latinx (The Atlantic 2019)The Meaning of Latinx (The Atlantic 2021) Reminder: Answer in your own words but use our course material to support your answers! If you quote from the material you MUST use the standard MLA citation format, citing author and pg. number. However, this is the best way to demonstrate your command of the course material. Each question is worth 5pts except #18 which is worth 15points. 1. Where did the term “Hispanic” originate? According to Gimenez, what are some issues surrounding the “Hispanic label?” The term Hispanic was created in the 1970s by the federal Office of Management and Budget, with the intent to remedy economic and political discrimination. A few issues that were mentioned in the text were the labels could create negative stereotypes, it would generally categorize people, and lastly it contributes to social racism by lumping people together rather than their national origin. 2. According to the US Census 2010 Brief, how does the federal government regard race and Hispanic origin? The 2010 US Census defines the Hispanic origin and race as “a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or any Spanish culture or origin regardless of race”. 3. What percent of people residing in the United States were counted as “Latino” in the 2010 Census? 16.3% 4. Do you agree or disagree with Dr. Gregory Rodriguez regarding his thoughts on assimilation? Why? I do agree with Dr.Rodriguez and his thoughts on assimilation. I do believe that it is not meant to disregard or obliterate the ethnic identity but rather to help the people adapt and be successful in everyday life. You can still keep you identity while learning and adapting to a new culture. A perfect example was used in the text regarding language. Learning a new language is challenging within itself but becoming fluent will make the path just that much easier. Also, learning a new language creates job opportunities if one chooses to do so. 5. What complaint does Dr. Ruben Martinez have regarding his ‘in-between-ness”? The complaint Dr. Matinez has with his “in-between-ness” is that he was misunderstood. He states in the text that where he wanted to be accepted as one thing he was not, and the places he denounced the label , the label was placed upon him. 6. According to Dr. Martinez what arrival ‘has re-opened the primordial wound of American identity”?
Dr. Martinez states that the arrival of African slaves and waves of new immigrants from Europe, Asia, and Latin America were the cause for the re-opening of the wound. 7. Why does Dr. Martinez believe that we can’t compare Hispanic immigrants to European immigrants that have come to the U.S.? The reason the two can’t be compared is because plenty of the 20 th century European immigrants who came to the US were granted access into the “middle class” were as the Hispanic immigrants were not along with the African-Americans and Asian-Americans. 8. What “favorite future cover” term does Dr. Otto Santa Ana propose and why? The term Dr. Santa Ana used was Americano because he thought it encompassed all the Americas. 9. Why does Dr. Santa Ana believe there is no such thing as a “Latino family”? Dr. Santa Ana believed there were no “Latino family” because he feels as though most Hispanic families grow up in the socializing unit of the family. Most learn the heritage and culture from within the family as to other families may mix with other cultures. 10. What impact has “va y ven” had on the Spanish language and multiculturalism within Latino communities in the United States according to Dr. Clara Rodriguez? She believes that the impact has allowed for opportunistic growth for the latino community. She explains this has contributed to the sustaining and new growth in the communities. 11. What does being Latino mean to Dr. Clara Rodriguez as outlined in her article? Dr. Rodriguez explains being latino to her means to be a part of one or more groups that have their own unique cuisine, music, and cultural and artistic traditions. 12. According to the CBS Sunday Morning “Hispanic Americans…” video clip, the Hispanic American community can be easily identified and is largely the same. (Answer True or False) False 13. Identify three songs for Dia de los Muertos and what they represent according to the NPR story: 1. “La Llorona” – The song represents discipline. Parents in the culture use it as a scare tactic for kids 2. “La Muerte Chiquita”- The song represents a love song through death. 3. “Calaveritas” – The song represents skulls, which is a homage to those who passed away. 14. In which country did Dia de los Muertos first begin and why was it celebrated?
Mesoamerica & it was celebrated to remember the children and the dead. 15. What are ‘two important things to know’ about Dia de los Muertos according to Dr. Salvador? The holiday has a complex history and the observance varies on region and the holiday is not a morbid event but instead a festive time 16. What are some of the activities associated with this holiday? A couple activities involved with the holiday mentioned in the text were decorating your home to welcome the dead and visiting a grave of a close family member 17. What is the significance of ‘bread’ in this celebration, and what can often be found baked in the loaf? What is the significance of finding this item? This is done to invite the dead and assure that their souls are present for the remembrance. You can find a plastic toy skeleton hidden by the baker in each rounded loaf for good luck . 18. (This question is worth 15 points) If you were going to build your own “altar” describe what it would look like and what would be included in it honoring the tradition of altars and Dia de los Muertos. If I were to make my own altar it would be for my grandfather. My altar would consist of military memorabilia, a lot of western movie dvds, and a green toy Jeep Cherokee. My grandfather served in the military for many years. Before he passed away, every time we were at his house or even in his spare time he would sit and watch old western movies as entertainment. The toy car would represent the car he had when he passed away. My altar would most likely be designed with camouflage party favors (cups, plates, utensils) on the table with an American flag and his medals lined up on the table.
