Racism Must post first. What, if anything, does the film Invictus convey to you about racism; specifically about racism's origins and solutions? What impressions does it leave you with regarding race relations in contemporary South Africa? You must start a thread before you can read and reply to other threads Throughout the film, I've noticed that the film conveys a perspective between black people and white people. At the beginning, you'll see a fence with white boys that play rugby with fine garments and trainers while black boys play football with ribbed clothes with no clothing or shoes. Nelson Mandela wanted everyone to remain together byso he expressed interest in the rugby squad.He first started going to all the matches and built a relationship with Francois. He also teaches rugby to the black men to get closer. Towards the end of the film, both races get along with each other despite races, and win the 1995 world cup. I believe Nelson Mandela has a purpose in contemporary South Africa for the things that he does. He successfully was able to bring 2 races together and show people that race should not be an issue. Some of the readings in this module suggest that the depiction of Nelson Mandela in Invictus is incomplete; that he was not always a champion of non-violence and reconciliation; that there were other significant characters in the anti-apartheid struggle besides him who are not represented in the film. How do you feel about such critiques? Since Mandela was, without doubt, a widely revered world leader, why is it a problem for a film to celebrate only him, and that too, only the parts of his legacy that are considered inspirational? Critics who wrote this may have found that Nelson Mandela was not always a defender of non-violence and peace in the Invictus film. I personally thought the movie represented Nelson Mandela as a president who puts in a lot of effort in a secretive way which people questioned.. The film director was attempting to demonstrate the aspects of Nelson Mandela, who handed hate to Francois during his administration, and who managed to bring about the rise of South Africa in 1995 at the Rugby World Cup. It's a challenge for a film to celebrate

just him and the bits that are viewed as inspiring, so viewers viewing the film may ask if the only good activities he's achieved being South Africa's president is being a nation together.
