The Humanities and Photography
Outcome(s)
HU200M1: Examine the influence of contemporary culture on arts and humanities.
Learn: Reading and Research The reading for this module will illustrate how the subjects for this course can help you develop skills in critical thinking. As you read, reflect on the ideas that are a part of your daily experience, as this will build your confidence in the subject. When you read about new concepts, take note of them and try to think of how these concepts may be a part of how you experience or evaluate music, movies, ethical dilemmas, or other points of view. As you
look at the images in the text, apply the ideas you encounter and practice evaluating the work beyond “thumbs up” or “thumbs down.” Investigate why you react to the works as you do. All of these reflections and considerations will help you in within this module.
You will also be learning about photography. It is remarkable to consider that cameras were once rare, expensive, and difficult to transport. You or your family members may remember a camera that required external flash bulbs and rolls of film. Today, photos can be taken in a
second and shared instantly. Consider whether you think the changes in technology have altered your impression of what a photograph can mean. In the reading, you will be exposed
to innovations in photography. The investigation will begin with a look at some of the first images on film, and then you will learn how photography subsequently developed as an art form.
Read the following from

Chapter 1: “The Humanities: An Introduction.”
●
Chapter 3: “Being a Critic of the Arts.”

Examine the influence of contemporary culture on arts and humanities.
Photography Assignment
For this assignment, you will apply the concepts of photography that you learned in this module. You will compare and contrast two photographs from the chapter on photography to
two photographs from your life. This means you will analyze four photographs total. For example, the photographs from your life could be of your ancestors, smartphone photos of pets or food, travel landscapes, or family portraits. You will compare them to the artistic photographs from the chapter “Photography.” Be sure that you only select photographs for

this assignment and not paintings. The objective is to examine the influence of contemporary culture on photography by taking a closer look at specific works of art and connecting these works to concepts of the field.
Photograph Analysis 1:
First, select a photograph from the required reading on photography that you would like to investigate. You will compare this photograph to a photograph from your life. Try to select a pair of photographs for the analysis that you think are interesting as a set — either in their similarities or their differences. Be creative in your selections but be sure that you can explain both works based on the concepts in the readings and communicate to a reader why
you put these photographs together.
Your analysis should include appropriate terminology from this module and the textbook as well as the following criteria:
●
Explain each photograph as though the reader has never seen it. What do you see?
●
Describe the image and the style in the photograph from the chapter. Then, do the same with your modern selection. Use and cite an idea from the chapter as a part of your analysis. Demonstrate how your understanding of the photographs has changed
as a result of learning more about photography from the reading in this module.
●
Assess the two photographs in comparison with each other and share your perspective. Why did you choose to analyze them together? What can one indicate about the other? Why did these photographs stand out to you? How might these pieces have been influenced by contemporary culture? Photograph Analysis 2:
Follow the same process you used in the first part of the assignment to analyze a second set of photographs. Select another photograph from the chapter on photography and another photograph from your life. Try to assess different styles from the first analysis to the second. For example, if you use a pair of landscapes for Analysis 1, opt for portraits for Analysis 2, or if you have chosen two photographs that are similar for Analysis 1, opt for two
contrasting photographs for Analysis 2 and build that assessment.
The assignment should be at least 600 words and must use and cite the text as a source. Cite the resource internally and in a full reference at the end, following APA style guidelines.
Citation is important to build the definitions, demonstrate your research, and make it clear which ideas are yours and which are from the source. Check with the Writing Center for APA style tips and other assistance.

Learn: Reading and Research The reading for this module will illustrate how the subjects for this course can help you develop skills in critical thinking. As you read, reflect on the ideas that are a part of your daily experience, as this will build your confidence in the subject. When you read about new concepts, take note of them and try to think of how these concepts may be a part of how you approach or evaluate music, movies, ethical dilemmas, or other points of view. As you look at the images in the text, apply the ideas you encounter and practice evaluating the work beyond “thumbs up” or “thumbs down.” Investigate why you react to the works as you do. All of these reflections and considerations will help you throughout this module.
You will also be introduced to elements of art and forms of human expression through art, and you will get a chance to learn how the humanities are already a part of your life. The readings help you to see that you are presently engaging with the humanities in your daily life. Attention to these details can help you expand your perspective, put yourself in someone else’s shoes, and become a more discerning viewer of artistic works.
In this module, you will have a chance to investigate the ideas behind some very impressive
works of architecture. An understanding of architectural terms and purposes will make these
often massive structures more approachable. Through the study of the art of architecture, you can come to understand the impact of buildings and spaces on your vision of the world.

Select two works of architecture from within your city, county, or state
. The works of architecture may be buildings, bridges, or monuments. All communities have architectural structures — from rural areas to large cities. You do not need to have seen the works of architecture yourself, but they should be structures that are within your state as this will help
you to focus on the ways these works of architecture are a part of your personal, local experiences.
You will analyze these creative expressions in light of what you have learned from the reading content and information in this module. This gives you a chance to share your perspective, express your point of view, and demonstrate how the readings helped you to see these works in a new way. One at a time, you will describe each selected work and explain how it demonstrates at least one concept from the module reading or other research on architecture.
Part I:
1.
Describe the first selected work of architecture from your area. You should describe the structure in detail. You are welcome to include photos, but do still offer the description. Explain what you see as though readers of your paper have not seen this structure.
2.
Explain at least one architectural concept from the reading. Use and cite the source to help define what the concept is, then explain what you think might be the purpose or importance of this concept. Why is this concept important when it comes to architecture? Add an explanation of the concept, as well as your interpretation of what the concept means.
3.
Connect the selected work of architecture to the concept. How do you see the structure demonstrating the concept? Explain where you see the ideas in application. How does the structure show the concept? How does understanding of the concept deepen your analysis of the work of architecture? Give examples of what may have changed in your understanding.
Part II:
You will follow the same steps 1, 2, and 3 with a second work of architecture. Be sure to highlight a different structure and a different concept from those you described in Part I.
Parts I and Part II should be submitted in the same document. The work should be at least 500 words in length and must use at least one outside source that is cited in APA style. Visit
the Writing Center for information on use and citation of sources.
After you receive access to each module, you will be able to see the submission requirements and a Checklist Rubric for the Competency Assessment.

Theatre and Literature
Outcome(s)
HU200M3:
Evaluate the impact of creative expressions on contemporary culture.
GEL-5.02:
Analyze the impact of human expression in the areas
of literature, art, culture, music, or film.
PC-2.4:
Develop an inspirational vision or mission.
Learn: Reading and Research In the reading for this module, you will also examine different styles of literature, including poetry and prose. As you complete the reading, try to see how it may relate to your life. Authors aim to bring readers into their work, so this may make the reading hold more meaning for you. Consider when you have had experiences similar to the sampled works and how language is used to tell a story, preserve a feeling, communicate an experience, or
create an encounter with words.
You will also take the stage to explore the forms, styles, and philosophies of theater and dance. Both have been a part of human civilizations through oral traditions, storytelling, and ancient theatrical productions. Theater and dance remain a vital part of cultural expression today. HU200M3:
Evaluate the impact of creative expressions on contemporary culture.
GEL-5.02:
Analyze the impact of human expression in the areas of literature, art, culture, music,

PC-2.4:
Develop an inspirational vision or mission.
In the reading you are introduced to the concept of a quest narrative: a story of a journey toward
a goal. In this two-part assignment, you will create a quest narrative and then evaluate the process of doing so. In Part I you will write a quest narrative from your life using literary concepts from the reading.

You will demonstrate how you used those concepts to help you tell your story and share an inspirational vision or mission. The quest narrative you share should be true, but you can address it to a fictional audience. In Part II, you will evaluate the narrative you created and reflect on the writing process and the use of literary concepts in writing. You will explain how you made certain decisions to build the narrative, and you will reflect on the process of creating a work of literature. This assignment will be a good exercise in communicating leadership, which
will be useful in the workplace and throughout your life.
You can write Part I as a letter, a story, a poem, or a play. There are many ways to approach this assignment for Part I. You can check the Assessment Part I Tip Sheet
for examples to help you brainstorm ideas and narrow your focus.
It is helpful to think of the quest narrative through four decisions.
1.)
What is my quest? 2.)
Which genre will I use to write it? 3.)
Which of the concepts from the reading could be useful in helping me to tell this story in an interesting way? 4.)
Who is my audience? Who do I want to encourage to take on a challenge as I did?
Be sure to carefully read the textbook’s discussion of the quest narrative. Then also consider the concepts from the reading on literature, as you will build those ideas into Part I and define them in Part II.
Part I:
You will compose a quest narrative from your life. Your audience should be someone that you want to encourage to overcome obstacles, build resilience, or take the same quest. You will tell the audience your story and call them to action as well. You should be writing this as a leader who wishes to inspire the person reading your narrative.
You must employ at least two of the concepts from the assigned reading on literature, such as metaphor, image, or symbol.
As you create the narrative, include details, emotions, and ideas that happened in those moments. You may have taken action in this quest without thinking it through, but take this opportunity to analyze the decision as a part of self-awareness, finding your potential, and becoming inspired to improve your situation. Do include the highs and the lows of the quest along with insight into why you kept moving toward your goal.
The quest narrative in Part I must be at least 1 page, but it can be longer.
Part II: In at least 500 words, you will evaluate the quest narrative you wrote in Part I.
●
Explain how you used the two concepts of literature in creating your narrative. Use and cite the text to define each concept that was used
and to explain how you interpreted
and employed this concept in your narrative. Why did you select these concepts to apply, and do you feel they were effective?
●
Clarify for the reader how you demonstrated leadership in your call to action for the reader. How did you communicate your vision? How will this narrative help the audience to uncover their own potential as a human being? Why would a narrative be an effective way to call another person to self-reflection and change?
●
Reflect on the writing process. How was the process of writing the narrative? What was

Cinema and Music
Outcome(s)
HU200M4:
Apply the influence of arts and humanities to daily experiences.
GEL-1.02:
Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard English. Learn: Reading and Research Many people believe that they could not go a day without listening to music. As you encounter the concepts of music in this reading, listen for distinct musical elements in some of your favorite music. You may have a sense of the subject of music, but learning more about how music is composed and structured can help you appreciate the details that you may begin to notice.
In this module’s reading, you will both discover cinematic concepts and hear how they have been applied in examples of specific films. As you read, consider how you may have noticed or overlooked these themes in films. Thinking of films you have seen recently may help you to add context and identify the parts of cinema in action. Read the following from
Humanities Through Arts

Chapter 9: “Music.”
●
Chapter 12: “Cinema.”
Competency Assessment
This Competency Assessment assesses the following outcome(s):
HU200M4:
Apply the influence of arts and humanities to daily experiences.
GEL-1.02:
Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard English. Music connects people to time and place. For instance, many of you may remember a song that comforted you during a difficult time or that was playing during a happy occasion like a graduation or engagement. Despite varying tastes, the one constant across humanity is that
music can play a role in times of comfort and celebration.
This assessment asks you to consider what songs are important to you and why. Or, if you would prefer, you may interview another person and use their replies to write this essay from their point of view. You can think of this as collecting the soundtrack of someone’s life or a musical autobiography.

In 750–1,000 words, consider and explain the role of music in your life story or of your interview subject’s life story. Your assessment should be written in essay format with a thesis, main points, and substantive conclusion.
You must incorporate a connection to the module’s reading, so you need to cite at least one source. Be sure to incorporate APA citations throughout the analysis and include a reference page at the end of your analysis.
For each of the following categories, you must include at least one specific song and artist. Express the music and link it directly to an experience and the emotions you felt. Remember
to link your individual experience to broaden your understanding of the impact of music at large.
In your analysis, address the following to examine music in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood:
●
What music do you associate with childhood? How did/does this music make you feel? How do your choices reflect your childhood experiences? What can you conclude about the nature of music and its impact after this reflection on your personal experience? As you discuss this time in life, include at least one specific song/artist. Explain their role in this experience.
●
What music do you associate with adolescence? Was this music a way to fit in or rebel? What can you conclude about the nature of music and its impact after this reflection on your personal experience? As you discuss this time in life, include at least one specific song/artist. Explain their role in this experience.
●
What music do you associate with comfort or inspiration in your adulthood? How do these songs help you deal with disappointment or stress? What can you conclude about the nature of music and its impact after this reflection on your personal experience? Include at least one specific song/artist for this category.
Remember to add a connection to the textbook to show what you have learned about music. Which ideas have deepened your analysis of music in this essay? Do not add this only at the end but incorporate ideas from the text throughout your essay in the introduction, conclusion, and replies to the questions above.
Your work should be double-spaced and include a title page in APA format. The title page does not count in the word count for the assessment. APA Formatting:
Incorporate APA citations throughout the analysis as well as a reference page at the end of the analysis. (The reference page does not
count towards the required word count for this assessment.) Visit the Writing Center for assistance with APA formatting guidelines.

Television and the Interrelationship of the Arts
Outcome(s)
HU200M5: Investigate how creative expressions can broaden perspective.
Learn: Reading and Research In this module, you will bring together what you have learned and make even more precise distinctions among art and the “art-like.” You will see how artistic expressions often imitate each other. You will get a chance to study works that elaborate on similar themes and see how some artists offer their interpretations of other artists.
You will also take a closer look at the history, cultural influence, and value of television and video art. While many people passively watch television throughout an average day, the reading
offers a new perspective on how television worked its way into daily life. The impact of television
as an art form, a method of cultural critique, and a means of communication will also be investigated in the chapter. This can make you a more active critical thinker when you pick up the remote control.
Read the following from
Humanities Through Arts
, 11th edition:
●
Chapter 2: “Interrelationships of the Arts.”
●
Chapter 13: “Television and Visual Art.”
Competency Assessment
This Competency Assessment assesses the following outcome(s):
HU200M5: Investigate how creative expressions can broaden perspective.
In this assessment, you will investigate how creative expressions can broaden your perspective. You will do this by reflecting on the influence that television and video art have had on a person. You may write about your own experiences or you may interview a friend or family member. In either case, you should remain focused on the objective of evaluating and demonstrating how a point of view is changed through the influence of television and video art.
The television programs in this assessment could have been viewed on a traditional television set, but they could also be from an internet series, streaming on a smartphone, or viewed through another medium. While movies are often shown on television, for this assessment, you will want to look into television programs or series in particular. Please check with your instructor if you have a question about programming that may suit the assessment.
1.
Open with an introduction to the paper. Give the reader a sense of context for the assessment. Offer a preview of main points and a thesis statement.

2.
Introduce two television programs from youth or adolescence. What do you or your interviewee remember about each show? Describe the experience of watching each program. How did each show have an impact upon a view of the world? What was learned, changed, or influenced?
3.
Introduce two television programs from adulthood. What do you or your interviewee remember about each show? Describe the experience of watching each program. How did each show have an impact upon a view of the world? What was learned, changed, or influenced?
4.
After this investigation, discuss the impact of television on changing a point of view. Was
there a marked influence? How was video art able to open up a new perspective or introduce new ideas? What may have made television more effective or more influential?
The work should be at least 500 words in length and must use at least one outside source that is cited in APA style. Check the Writing Center for information about the use and citation of sources.
