Prior to beginning work on this Discussion forum, 1. In order to start thinking about history, think of a film, video, image, song, or piece of music that reminds you of an era or event in the past. Consider the film, video, image, song or piece of music that you selected. Explain why you chose this piece. Explain what it tells us about the historical event or era it depicts. Think about what you want your classmates to know about you as a person and your academic, professional, and personal goals. 2. Next, start thinking about your work for this course, which will focus on American history from 1877 to the present. One of the primary areas of focus in the course will be the examination of political and civil rights of traditionally disadvantaged groups within American Society and their struggles for social equity within American society. To this end, you will select one of the following disadvantaged groups and examine their experiences throughout the course, culminating in your Final Paper. (Your group choice does not have to relate to your chosen historical piece above.) African Americans Native Americans/American Indians Women Immigrants Consider which group you have chosen to focus on. Why have you chosen this group? If you are having trouble deciding, which groups are you most interested in and why? Hi Class, My name is --------. I was born and raised in New Orleans, LA. I retired from the USAF in 2018 and currently reside in Southern California. I'm blessed to have a beautiful fiancé, and we have nine children, one granddaughter, and two grandchildren. I'm currently pursuing a degree in Organizational Management. I aim to become a Site Manager in the company I now work for. The Site Manager's main job is to take care of the people. That's something I constantly feel is essential. The piece of music I chose was "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Round." The original author of the song is unknown. This song became the theme for the civil rights movement. I chose it because every time I hear the music, it reminds me of conversations with my parents and grandparents about
struggles and how life was during that time. This song embodies strength and power. It was a message to all that no one will stop us, and we're pushing for freedom and equality. The group I chose to examine throughout this course is African Americans. The goal of this class is to bring light to the country's social injustice and inequality issues. I aim to highlight and learn from the past and present and build a better tomorrow.
