1 Hi Art 108 - Question 3:  What impact did Constantine's conversion to Christianity have on art, and how did the image of Christ change after his conversion? Constantine's most significant contribution to Christian art after his conversion to Christianity was grand monumental architecture. He spent a little time in Rome, where he built the very first Vatican basilica above St. Peter's tomb, the church now recognized as St. John Lateran. He also built the most enormous triumphal arch in Roman history. He constructed grandiose basilicas throughout the remainder of the empire, some of which were as far from others as The Church of the Holy Trinity in  Trier and Constantinople, Germany. After becoming a Christian, Constantine became more accepting of the Christian religion in Rome, permitting the Church to grow throughout his empire and evangelize open spaces. As emperor, Constantine rendered Christianity non-anti-Roman. The Church would never have been able to establish itself as firmly in Rome and the West if Constantine had not converted and reformatted the city ( Jensen.,) . As a result of his conversion, widespread Christian persecution in the Roman stopped, and the authority and influence of Christians in Rome significantly expanded. Additionally, his conversion helped the Catholic Tradition of the West incorporate Roman law, which served as the foundation for Western ideas about justice and the law. As a result, the Roman empire's inhabitants began to respect Christ and treat the Christian religion with more respect and humanity.
