Critical Debates: Landscape, Memory and Contemporary Design
Karamanea Panita’s “Landscape, Memory, and Contemporary Design,” aims to connect
between the landscape and the environment. Panita is currently a lecturer at the Technical
University of Crete, and she is pursuing her Ph.D. Most of her research revolves around mutual
integration, the types of design, built environment and landscape. She has also won numerous
international recognitions including her participation in international and Hellenic architectural
competitions, which she won. She has also written extensively on the subject landscape and other
fundamentals associated with landscape such as the theory of landscape, landscape architecture,
and ecological design. The author targeted all people interested in landscape designs and the
impact of the design on their respective environment. Some of the targeted individuals and
entities are professionals, scholars and learners. Panita is an instructor meaning her writings and
articles targeted to continue the narrative and research around landscapes and designs.
The current text takes the format of an essay. The essay contains three important areas,
which are the prologue, main text and the epilogue. It encourages landscape designers and
architectures to develop the landscape before proceeding with the project. The objective is to
have an idea of the fundamentals of the environment, and the connection of various mechanism
and processes. Panita continues to present that the landscape should be a combination of the
memory of the location and the historical component. It is also important to create the systems
and production of the landscape to resonate with the expectations of the visitors. Landscape also
forms the important component, which is designing the location to meet the working demands
and other operational requirements.
Panita also uses three exemplars to indicate contemporary design and landscape memory.
The three sites are Minoan Necropolis, Eptapirgion, and Elefterias Square. The author states that
these three structures and designs contain specific details that resonate with the perceptions and
expectations of the targeted people. Eleftherias Square is an example of a structure that combines
the features of a design to the painful historical movements such as the World Wars and the fire
in 1917. Eptapirgion Area combines both the features of the city with the medieval castle. Panita
says, “Frightening wild site” (p. 123) because the region is associated with prison and war.
Minoan Necropolis is another structure that is associated with cemetery and structured away
from civilization. Panita is able to relate the painful memories with the landscape and design of
such structures.
I believe that many people relate with a structure or landscape to historical component.
The historical component can be the experience or other challenges that individuals suffered in
the same location. For example, Panita used painful memories to highlight the designs and the
perception of the community towards recognizing the structures.
Panita says, “Landscape architecture as an interdisciplinary subject of research is
particularly important for understanding the construction of culture and place, identities and
space, environmental issues and habitats. Landscape architecture offers a holistic perspective on
integrating environment with culture” (p. 126). Panita is correct with her perspective about the
landscape. The design of the landscape requires understanding the environmental issues. For
example, the design of landscape especially with live features such as plants needs water and the
design should include the numerous associated with the use of water. Some of the factors include

the source of the water and the possible ruin off. In addition, certain features included in the
design should reflect the cultural dynamics and fundamentals of the specific region.
Phnom Bakheng is strategically located in a hill in which the ancient worshippers would
see the sunrise and other regions especially the citizens. The architectures considered the use of
the structures before designing and subsequent construction. Such views reflect the expectations
of Panita who states that the design and landscape should be considered before the actual
construction of the project.
Looking at the image, persons interested with architecture and environment can relate
with the image. The image shows a structured roof with clear image of the city. Looking at the
image, a person can position the location and other operational requirements. It is a theater and
also supports numerus events and activities. An example of such an image has a lasting
impression on the people and those interested with the use of the structure.
Brown & Corry (2011) stated that culture keeps changing meaning the landscape and
design requirements should reflect these changes. The objective is to ensure the decisions made
reflect the operational and the demands of the construction. Panita also points to the need of
culture in design and construction or influencing the landscape. Panita said, “Landscape
architecture offers a holistic perspective on integrating environment with culture” (p. 126).
Therefore, it is important to consider the cultures of the people and ideological frame of the
people before making any decisions when it comes to the construction and design requirements.
It is important to note that culture itself is a form of memory, which impacts the thinking and
reasoning of the people. By extension, it affects the perception of a location, and any decision
made regarding the location.
The example of my own finding is the labyrinth. Many buildings have labyrinth but the
design of such labyrinths incorporates the purpose of the structure. For example, a labyrinth for a
restaurant is different from a labyrinth of an art gallery. It means the practicability of the
structure relative to the environmental factors impacts the design of the labyrinth. Panita
employed the theme of ‘pain’ to indicate the role of the designs and the presence of the
structures. The same ideology becomes evident when it comes to design of labyrinth. For
example, a broader labyrinth might be required for spaces that require carrying boxes and other
bulky products and services. The same applies to landscape design in which architectures should
recognize the purpose of the design and construction before proceeding with the construction.
Therefore, functionality is an important component in ensuring the functionality of the labyrinth.
Questions for class:
What are some of your proposals when it comes to design of labyrinth?
Can landscape be integrated into the design of labyrinth?
