ART 102 Period Project 01
Part 1
Saint Mark image
One of the selected image is Saint Mark which is approximately seven feet and nine inches high.
Donatello who came up with the sculpture was commissioned by ilinen weavers’ guild. It was
notable mostly because of its detailed realism which shows the extent of the artist’s excellent
skills. In the sculpture, even the veins of St. Mark’s left hand are visible which he was holding
the text with. One of the major change when the sculpture was made was the use of contrapposto
which had been employed by many Roman and Greek sculptors which dated back from the
classical period at around 480 BC (
Kleiner, 2015). It was largely forgotten during the Middle
Ages by the Europeans. It was during the medieval times that the sculptors depicted the human
figure and were given stylized boy parts.

Tempietto image
The next image is Tempietto which is an architecture building which commemorated a
martyrdom. The architectural design in this building was consistent with the values of people at
that time which was based on ancient Roman models (
Kleiner, 2015). The major difference
between the early and high Renaissance architecture styles is that early styles put more emphasis
on adorning flat wall surfaces but high renaissance which put more emphasis on sculptural
handling of architectural masses. The high Renaissance era was initiated by Tempietto.

The Four Apostles
The four apostles painting was created during the reformation at around 1517 and had a lot of
impact on Germany. One of the major issues at that time was that the icons were against the
word of God (
Kleiner, 2015). The painting was a representation of Peter, John, Mark and Paul.
During this time, images were not commissioned by protestant church which meant that some
protestant artists could only commission their work. This painting showed the religious artwork
had to change to fit the religious change of reformation during those days.

The Waterseller of Seville painting
This is the title of the painting by Diego Velázquez, from around 1618 to 1622. The original
version of the painting was done by Velazquez while he was just a teenager. The historians of art
compared this painting to the still life that were mainly painted during the 17
th
century (
Kleiner,
2015). The style used in this painting was mainly realistic and there were limited palette of color.
The painting was done during the Seville period and the artwork is now stored at Apsley hose in
London.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Immaculate Conception of the Escorial
This was a religious painting by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo who was a Spanish. It is regarded as
one of his best works. It is most notable because of the outfit, the use of lighting, and the moon.
This piece of art was later identified as the Immaculate Conception of the Granja because of a
