Movie Choice: Don’t Look Up Summary of the Movie: The story begins at Michigan State University, where astronomy Ph.D. student Kate Dibiasky discovered a previously unknown near-Earth object with the Subaru Telescope. She reported her findings to her professor Randall Mindy, who discovers it is a comet that will collide with earth in six months, causing an extinction. As a next step, the scientists decided to leak the news to the media in order to get some attention, but the hosts of the talk show did not care and trivialized the apocalypse. As a result, the public interprets the serious warnings on social media as infotainment and dismisses the scientists' concerns as a joke. In spite of their findings, the White House does not even care and thinks that the midterm elections are more important than the apocalypse. The US president uses social media to ignite the crowd to not look up at the sky and to not trust what scientists say, saying that the problem will be solved through the use of social media. The 'Don't Look Up' campaign of the president of the United States is so successful, but the comet still hits the Earth, bringing about the apocalypse. Theme 1: climate change -Ignorance of people to systematic risk Relevance of the movie: -Two scientists found out that an unknown comet will collide with the Earth in six months and they released their findings to the public during a talk show. The public treated the scientists’ concerns as jokes. -The movie uses comet to imply climate change Theme 2: the relationship between social media and politics -huge use of social media as a political news outlet -political figures using social media to voice their opinions (e.g. Donald Trump getting suspended on Twitter) -political socialization starts from a young age due to the increased use of social media -the discussion of issues increased, and create polarization in political -those in power could control the flow of the information (e.g. ccp controls the covid information in Weibo and WeChat and also / Edward joseph Snowden case) Relevance of the movie: President Orlean used “Don’t Look Up” campaign to persuade followers that the comet is not a big deal, utilizing the viral challenges to further provoke the dispute between the conflicting parties. Social media outlets are flooded with the breakup
news of two celebrities, overshadowing and downplaying the significance of Earth’s doom. The government arrested the scientist for the reason of spreading false information. Theme 3: social media’s influence on the flow of information -social media and news outlets have been contributing to an explosive growth of fake news stories and false information. -a popular fake news story can have deadly consequences. (eg events like "Pizzagate" and the storming of the Capitol in 2021) - Research shows that people changed their views about a social issue in the past year because of something they saw on social media(eg #MeToo movement to #BlackLivesMatter and #MAGA) - Research shows that fake news could easily evoke emotional responses in readers by selling strong emotions to the general public, such as excitement, fear, and anger (Horner, 2021) Relevance to the movie: Dibiasky and Mindy took their message to the media, but the platform is a wildly banter-driven morning show on which the producers make their story into a cutesy scientific discovery interspersed with the incident involving Grande. President made a "don't look up" campaign by using the power of social media, the US president stir up the crowd not to look up at the sky and not to believe what the scientists say.
