Video Worksheet [1] Weekly Field Trip with Professor Mancke Instructions : Select one (1) animal and one (1) plant from the field trip video and complete the following questions. The questions must be answered thoroughly to receive full credit. Additionally, indicate the week and field trip video this assignment if for. Week: 8 Name of field trip video: Glacier National Park ANIMAL Common Name: Columbian Ground Squirrel Scientific Name: Urocitellus columbianus Provide a brief description (no less than 50 words). The Columbian Ground Squirrel ( Urocitellus columbianus ) is a small size rodent commonly found in regions of canada and northwestern america. It features a distinct coloring of light brown on its back with a burnt orange stomach and measures up to 16 inches in height. They are well known for their long hibernating period which is eight to nine months out of the year. (wikipedia) Describe three (3) significant behaviors exhibited by the animal. The start and end of each animal's hibernation phase are determined by the temperature and depth at which it hibernates, which varies depending on the animal's sex and age group. Male reproductive organs decrease and cease producing sperm in the winter, then expand again in the hot months. Males engage in aggressive conduct at this period in an effort to find a partner. (wikipedia) What is the geographical range of the animal? What type of habitat does it require to exist? The Columbian ground squirrel is found in northwestern America like Montana, Idaho, Washington and parts of canada. They live in moist rocky plains and mountainous areas with elevations that fall between 700-8000 meters. They require areas with lots of vegetation which allows them to feed before hibernation. (wikipedia)
What type of human activity is threatening the habitat and existence of the animal? Columbian ground squirrels were viewed as pests when agricultural methods were introduced to their area, which had a detrimental effect on yields of crops. As a result, farmers frequently euthanize them, which is the greatest human threat they encounter. (wikipedia) PLANT Common Name: Corn Lily Scientific Name: Veratrum californicum Provide a brief description (no less than 50 words). NOTE: Cite references in the appropriate section below. The corn lily also commonly referred to as skunk cabbage is a plant that belongs to the lily family (Liliaceae). The reason people know it as corn lily is because it looks similar to stalks of corn and can grow up to the same height. This plant is very poisonous however as it matures it is known to become less toxic. Describe three (3) significant features exhibited by the plant. The corn lily is a very tall plant. It is capable of growing up to six feet tall. The leaves are very recognisable. Each leaf wraps around the stem and shrinks in size as they grow up the stem. Each leaf is parallel ribbed and round with an oval shape. The flowers this plant grows are small white flowers and have 6 petals. What is the geographical range of the plant? What type of habitat does it require to exist? Originating in western North America, this species may be found from Nevada all the way to Washington. The habitat is found in meadows close to sources of water and consists of wet soils and big open spaces. What type of human activity is threatening the habitat and existence of the plant? Although natural reasons like wildfires and droughts cause a majority of losses in corn lily populations, human activities like development and expansion also has an impact on the plant's survival and poses a threat to its environment. ***Cite ALL references here for both the animal and plant responses***

Use both common and scientific names in the summary. Additionally, indicate the week and field trip video this assignment if for. Week: 8 Name of video: Carolina Sandhills NWR - Part 2 First, Josh starts off discussing the Red-Cockhead woodpecker (Picoides borealis) or (Dryobates borealis). This bird, which is a specialist that favors areas with longleaf pine forests, is an endangered species. Because of the decline in the longleaf pine population, less than 15,000 of these birds remain. Next he introduces a plant which is a member of the pea family in the genus Baptisia. Its flowers are light to dark blue when they bloom in the spring which is how you can define this plant along with its leaves which die to ash in early summer. The other plant he talks about is the Tuba milkweed (Asclepias tomentosa). Because of the hairy appearance of the leaves, this plant's species name signifies hair or velvety. These plants have long been used as herbal remedies, named for the Greek deity Asclepias. It has opposite-sized leaves that may grow up to 12 inches in length, and because it provides food for monarch caterpillar larvae, it is home to these butterflies. Additionally, he discusses and delves deeper into the relationship between the American Medical Association insignia and Greek mythology.
