Research and describe two unique rites of passage to adulthood from a culture other than your own. Explain their impact on normative development in the context of that culture.
Summarize the different types of attraction presented in this week's readings, and explain how these manifest differently or lead to different relationship outcomes based on their cultural context and norms. For example, are there cultures in which a particular type of attraction may not serve a young person well?
The two unique rites of passage to adulthood that I chose to study for this week’s discussion were the Jewish Coming of Age Tradition, Bar and Bat Mitzvah, and the Hispanic Coming of Age Tradition, Quinceanera. Jewish boys and girls spend many weeks preparing for their Bar and Bat
Mitzvah, and after their ceremony, they hold a reception to celebrate their hard work and accomplishments in their young lives. “Around the world, young Jewish boys and girls celebrate
their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs at age 13 and 12 in order to demonstrate their commitment to their faith and recognize that they are now responsible for following Jewish law” (Nunes & Pfeffer, 2016). Young Hispanic females celebrate their Quinceanera when they turn 15. “The coming-
of-age tradition typically begins with a Catholic mass where the girl renews her baptismal vows and solidifies her commitment to her family and faith” (Nunes & Pfeffer, 2016). A party follows the mass to celebrate with friends and family. Various cultures have different views and ideas on types of attraction. “
Attraction occurs in different ways and in different relationships for different social, psychological, and biological reasons and each one of them is important to who we each are as individuals” (Fader, 2022). Sexual attraction, Physical attraction, Romantic attraction, Emotional attraction, and Aesthetic attraction are very different forms of attraction. Sexual attraction is a desire for sexual activity and touching with another individual. Physical attraction is the desire to be around other individuals and to be loved and cared for. Romantic attraction is the want to be in a relationship
with someone else. Emotional attraction is the want to be emotionally present with someone else while sharing feelings. Aesthetic attraction is when you are attracted to someone based on their looks. Depending on the culture, some of these forms of attraction may not be culturally acceptable. These various types of attraction are acceptable at different ages depending on your culture. Reference:
