1. Define colonialism. Colonialism is how/where one state takes over another and enforces and compels their characteristics like their economy, culture, or political methods onto the place that state is taking control of. 2. Define superimposed boundaries. Superimposed boundaries are boundaries that are established on top of already existing ones by being conquered or taken over by a higher power. 3. Identify an area where there is a current border dispute rooted in the legacy of colonialism. An area where there is a current border dispute is the Hatay or southern Turkish province. This area is in dispute with Syria because since Syria became independent from France, its government does not honor France’s past decision that separated that province to Turkey. 4. Describe a political consequence of superimposed boundaries in Africa. One political consequence of superimposed boundaries in Africa is that it might need to move the capital location, or some laws might not apply to certain areas anymore and those areas might separate and become their own state.
5. Explain how superimposed boundaries caused ethnic conflict in the Belgian Congo, now present-day, Democratic Republic of Congo. Superimposed boundaries caused ethnic con±ict in the Belgian Congo because many tribes and ethnic groups overlap one another and they each try to take control and regularly dispute on who should get the resources and power, and most of this con±ict is because the superimposed boundaries mixed di²erent ethnicities and cultures. 6. Describe how superimposed boundaries have impacted the cultural landscape in Africa. Superimposed boundaries have impacted the cultural landscape in Africa by creating multiple con±icts between tribal ethnicities/races/religions, and di²erent groups have di²erent cultures so when they are mixed some may dispute about who should have the higher authority and some might ³ght for power and the main culture and territory. 7. Compare how a sphere of influence impacts the economy in a colonizing and colonized country. A sphere of in±uence impacts the economy in a colonizing and colonized country because whatever group/tribe in±uences that area the most is what the main culture and practices of that area would be.
