Learning about different cultural practices has helped me better understand how narrowmindedness and prejudice constrict diversity in several ways. Prejudice can lead to people being less willing to pursue things outside of their comfort zone. If a child is constantly shown images of a certain gender being portrayed in a role, they are more likely to just assume that role is only for a certain gender. The diversity in gender among occupations is the best example of prejudice. Our society bases jobs off of biology and culture. Males are considered to be strong so they get put into the box of only having physical labor jobs. Women get marginalized into nurturing jobs like school teachers and nurses. My initial response to the sources I read for my paper was genuine interest. Reading through some of the articles has helped me be able to describe and accept my cultural diversity. “ The anthropologist has become so familiar with the diversity of ways in which different people behave in similar situations that he is not apt to be surprised by even the most exotic customs”(Miner,1956). We all have certain customs that may be considered strange to some else in a different culture. A bias that I may have is that some of the practices I do daily may seem normal to me, so it may be difficult for me to see another perspective. A problem I am having examining my culture is truly understanding the difference between etic and emic perspectives. Miners article will help me take an outsiders perspective by allowing me to emulate the style he wrote in. The article was about Americans, but he wrote it as if it was about a foreign culture.
