Truth and reconciliation: - What issue is identified? How is this different from the rest of Canadian society? - The issue that was identified was that aboriginal’s culture and languages have been taken away from them. The rest of Canadian society wasn’t affected as they were allowed to practice their own cultures and speak their own languages, - What needs to happen for change to occur? - What needs to happen for change to occur the federal government needs to create and publish reports of aboriginal children in care and non-aboriginals, the spending of preventive and care services by childcare agencies and the effectiveness of the various interventions. - What suggestions have or are being made? -Suggestions that have been made are that governments of all levels adopt Jordan’s concept, which entails having complete access to all government- funded services. This idea which applies to aboriginal people not living on the reserve was only in effect for around half of the population. - Who needs to be involved? - The government of all levels of Canada, The aboriginal people, and every resident of Canada. This encompasses not just those who have been directly affected. - In your mind, is it doable? - It is definitely doable, and it should have been done a long time ago. - What are the first steps to take? - the first step to take is for the government of Canada to design parenting programs that are culturally suitable for aboriginal families. Additionally, national standards need to be developed for aboriginal child abduction and custody cases. This would guarantee that aboriginal families are better able to care for their children and that child welfare services are working in the best interest of aboriginal families and children. - What will be the challenges? - the challenges will be persuading the government to investigate and correct any of the things they have wronged in the past. What will be the benefits?
- the benefits will be the improvement of relations between aboriginal persons, and non-aboriginal descent. There will be more knowledge of the history and culture of aboriginal peoples. More opportunities for aboriginal people to get training and education of high standard. More acknowledgement of the rights and interests of the rights and interests of indigenous peoples to their lands and resources as well as an opportunity to show the government what the aboriginal community is capable of accomplishing. - What impact do you think following these two items in the Calls to Action will have on Indigenous culture? On Canadian culture as a whole? - there will be a major positive effect on any of the future generations whether they live on the reserve or not. These individuals will have the opportunity to any assistance they may need in order to become successful in raising their children. They will be able to parent their children with more opportunity for them to be able to flourish in their adult lives. This will lead to a hopeful increase in the societal acceptance of their culture. - What additional recommendation might you make as part of the truth and reconciliation within Canadian culture? What impact do you think this recommendation would make? -Additional reconciliation of missing peoples, as well as missing children and burial information like the truth and reconciliation inside Canadian culture. For many years, there’s been hundreds of cases of aboriginal women and children going missing and no reports are made to the public or on social media.
