ANTH 243 Medical Anthropology: Human Biology and Health Homework 3: Due: 10/16/23 Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Assignment Learning goals Exposure to lead hazards is a major public health concern in the United States . A paper published in 2022 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences estimates that nearly half the US population (170 million people) was exposed to high levels of lead during early childhood. Lead is a developmental neurotoxicant (a chemical that causes damage to the nervous system from the prenatal period through adolescence) and is used in a range of industrial applications. Although the use of lead in many products in the US is now prohibited, lead still exists in the environment where people can come into contact with it. The health impacts of lead exposure in children are both irreversible and entirely preventable. For this assignment, you will design a health education handout about childhood lead poisoning for parents/caregivers living in Broome County. Health education is a form of communication that is designed to improve health literacy , which is the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to make informed health-related decisions for oneself and others. Well-designed health education materials use language and images that effectively communicate ideas to a diverse audience. Being able to use plain language to communicate complex ideas is an important skill for everyone to have. Therefore, the goal of this assignment is to develop a handout that effectively communicates information to parents/caregivers about potential lead hazards in their home so that they can keep their children safe from lead exposure. Example handouts can be found here and here . Guidelines for creating the handout General Design a handout that is visually engaging and uses plain language Your source material for this assignment should come from the New York State Department of Health’s Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention site . Use these tips to create accessible language for your handout: Use plain language (examples can be found here ) Write short sentences Whenever possible, avoid words with more than 2 syllables Whenever possible, avoid jargon; if jargon is included, define the term using plain language Once your handout text is written, navigate to this Readability Formulas website Locate the Calculate Text Readability area and check off the box next to “Average Reading Level Consensus Calc” Paste the text from your handout and click “Calculate Text Readability” If the grade level is above 8, rework the language using the above tips Take a screenshot of the readability score and submit that image to Brightspace on the 3rd page of your handout Content to be included on handout (40 points total) Use these headings in your handout Section content Title (2 points) Come up with a title that communicates the main idea behind the handout Who is most at risk?
