ANTH 243 Medical Anthropology: Human Biology and Health Homework 1: Due: 9/11/23 Illness Narrative and Analysis Assignment Learning goals People’s experiences with illness vary widely, however biomedical models of disease are designed to diagnose disease based on a specific set of symptoms. As we learned in class, often there is not a good fit between a diagnosis and a person’s illness experience. In an effort to gain insight into how a person understands and experiences their illness, psychiatrist and medical anthropologist Dr. Arthur Kleinman developed the method of the “illness narrative.” For this assignment you will create an illness narrative by conducting an interview with someone about their personal experience with illness and then analyze their narrative using the biomedical and biocultural perspectives of disease learned in this course. Step 1: Interview someone about an illness experience (10 points) Identify someone that you want to interview about an illness experience for an assignment in your Medical Anthropology course. The person you are interviewing is called the informant. Before you conduct the interview: You will need to create a transcript of the interview. This will be a written record of your questions and the informant’s responses. You can either write down the informant’s responses during the interview, or you can audio record the interview and write down the responses later. Read through Step 2 of the assignment BEFORE you conduct the interview to understand how you will need to analyze the interview. In particular, note that you will be analyzing the interview from a biocultural perspective , so you need to make sure that your interview includes questions that will yield this type of information. Conducting the interview: I’m doing an assignment about how people experience illness for my Medical Anthropology course. This interview is anonymous and I will not record your name or identifying information. I’d like you to recall a time recently when you felt ill and visited a healthcare provider. I’m going to ask you a few questions about this experience and record your answers.
ANTH 243 Medical Anthropology: Human Biology and Health Homework 1: Due: 9/11/23 1. What are the main problems the illness/health problem caused for you? 2. What do you think caused the illness/health problem? (possible probe) 3. Why do you think it started when it did? (possible probe) 4. What kind of treatment did you hope to receive? 5. How did the illness/health problem impact your family and friends? (possible probe) Creating the transcript Create a document with the following formatting and information Format Double-spaced, 1” margins, 12-point font of your choosing Header Name, date, ANTH 243 HW 1 Type out the transcript using this format: Interview Transcript [Your name]: What are the main problems the illness/health problem caused for you? Informant (do not use names): When I got COVID, I had a terrible headache and sore throat. I had to take personal days at work because I had already used up my vacation, so because of COVID I ended up losing out on my summer vacation. Step 2. Analyze the illness narrative (50 points) Analyze the illness narrative from a biomedical and biocultural perspective by answering the following three questions. By “analyze” I mean examine the illness narrative using information you have learned in class about levels of explanation to understand how a person’s social, economic, cultural, and/or political context can influence their experience with illness. 1. What is meant by a biomedical explanation of disease causation? Explain this concept in your own words and then relate it to information provided in the illness narrative (e.g., discuss the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, physiological explanations of disease). In your response to this prompt you will: a. Explain biomedical disease causation (5 points)
ANTH 243 Medical Anthropology: Human Biology and Health Homework 1: Due: 9/11/23 b. Discuss three different examples from the interview that illustrate biomedical disease causation (15 points) 2. What is meant by a biocultural explanation of disease causation? Explain this concept in your own words and then relate it to information provided in the illness narrative (e.g., discuss the social, economic, cultural, or political factors that played a role in the illness experience). In your response to this prompt you will: a. Explain biocultural disease causation (5 points) b. Discuss three different examples from the interview that illustrate biocultural disease causation (15 points) 3. Speculate about what might be gained by the patient and the healthcare provider if the informant had been given the opportunity to discuss their illness experience with their provider. (10 points) Guidelines on the analysis: Your analysis should directly follow the transcript. Create a new section in the document with the heading Interview Analysis . Use the question numbers 1, 2 and 3 in your document but DO NOT include the text of three questions. The page limit for the analysis is 2 pages, double-spaced, 1” margins, using 12-point font. One or two sentences beyond the page limit is ok, but anything beyond that will not be graded. The analysis should be written in your own words, meaning you should not use direct quotes, paraphrase source material, borrow language from another student’s paper or use AI generated content. Homework assignments must be submitted on Brightspace. Brightspace uses the Turnitin computer program to check the originality of written work against published works, material on the Internet, and against the work of other students. If you do not use your own words on the assignment, you will lose points. For your assignment to be on time, you must upload it to Brightspace by 11:59pm on the due date.
