Module Two Question 1
Describe one of the beliefs and values of the Navajo as illustrated in your readings.
One of the beliefs of the Navajo was that things were solved by "talking it out". Currently
they do have three branches of government (the president, a court system, and a
representative body of delegates) to solve problems, but they have deemed that just
addressing the solution is great enough, with previous history backing it up. This is
something unique to the Navajo as their beliefs.
Module Two Question 2
Describe one way in which the Navajo have incorporated their beliefs and values into the
societal structure on the reservation since regaining some autonomy in the 1970's.
As mentioned before, they currently have three branches of government (the president, a
court system, and a representative body of delegates). This is similar to the American
government (three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial), but still incorporating their
beliefs, and maintaining some of it's original structure. They try to maintain their origins,
where government is not something largely needed, while still having one to fit the societal
structure.
Module Two Question 3
What beliefs and values can be found in your culture? How do these beliefs and values
influence your day-to-day life?
A belief in American culture that can be different from other cultures is informality. In
America, having too many formalities can lead to a complex relationship that may be putting
people too high on a pedestal. Keeping things informal allows people to connect faster and
maintain a relationship that doesn't strain. This affects my day-to-day life by letting me be
close to people of many different ages and positions. In some cultures, it may be strange to be
close and informal to your boss, but here, I am able to freely communicate with my boss
without having to address them too formally.
