1. Briefly, how have society and culture influenced the historical study of women in music? Society and culture have influenced the study of women in music in a significant way. Because we live in a patriarchal society, women’s history in music has often been overshadowed by their male counterparts. With shifts in society and the culture with cultural feminism during the 1870s to 1910, there is an exploration of women in music in various formats and finally literature to challenge the limits of a music history that had so often forgotten women. Then with second wave feminism that occurred in the 1970s, there was a new discipline referred to as ‘women’s studies’. With acknowledgment of women in society, there becomes more emphasis on the history and the current lives of women and their occupations. 2. From an evolutionary perspective, what is the significance of the mother’s voice? The mother’s voice has been used to soothe for all time. The average fetus can hear during the last trimester of pregnancy and the mother’s voice is actually the most intense acoustic in the womb. After bipedalism, the voice became more important. For example, neanderthal mothers would sing to their infants to confirm that they were close to them. 3. Using at least 4 musical terms, describe one of your favorite songs by a woman composer/performer. Provide a YouTube link to a reference recording. The song that I picked to discuss is “Promiscuous” by Nelly Furtado featuring Timbaland. I picked this song because it is a complex song in terms of the layering of beat and the vocals. It has gradual changes throughout the song with the beat. The song is seen as a duet or “conversation” with Furtado and Timabaland and can be considered polyphonic. It has a 114 BPM and is in B minor.
