Quiz: Population Selection
Question 1
2.5 / 2.5 pts
This course requires that you complete an immersion project with a population with whom you
are not familiar.
Please check in your geographical area to find out what specific populations
are available to you for events participation, organization/agency availability, and
interviews.
This group should be a different culture than which you identify and must have
significantly different cultural features. In addition, you must have selected a group with whom
you have little or no prior experience and cannot use cultural groups identified in prior cultural
immersion experiences.
In other words, the cultural group for all parts of this Cultural
Immersion Project must be new for you.
NOTE:
As you consider populations, vulnerable populations such as children and dependent
adults will not be approved. As an example, individuals within populations that could not sign
their own informed consent should not be considered.
Here is a sample listing of possible populations that you can consider:
African/African Americans (Including subgroups, e.g. Haitian, other Caribbean,
African)
Hispanic/Latin groups (Including subgroups, e.g. Puerto Ricans, Mexicans)
Asian/Asian-American (including subgroups, e.g. East Asians, South Asians, Pacific
Islanders)
Middle Easterners (Including e.g. Lebanese, Moroccans, Palestinians, Jewish)
Native Americans/First Nation/American Indian (Including, e.g., Cherokee, Mohawk,
Lakota, Chippewa)
Recent Immigrants
Refugees
Adults with disabilities
Elderly/older persons
LGBTQ+
People who are in poverty/homeless population
Deaf culture
Veterans
You are not limited to the above populations; however, if you would like to conduct your
immersion project with a group not listed here, please contact your instructor for approval.
NOTE:
You will be approved for one (1) population, and you will complete the project on the
one (1) approved population for all parts of the Cultural Immersion Project. Changing your
population for the project without prior approval will impact your grade.
What two populations (in order of preference) do you have in mind for your immersion
project (please see options above)?
