Critical Analysis Paper
Out of 30 marks; 15% of final grade
DUE Dec 6
th
11:59 pm through Avenue to Learn
Purpose of this assignment
: to critically assess a popular T.V. show for the accurate depiction
of a forensic anthropologist with respect to the following: role, ethics and professionalism. (Think
back to the lecture on critical thinking and the lecture on ethics and professionalism.)
Step 1:
Read the assignment
Step 2:
Watch the episode of “Bones” - Season 1 Episode 13: Woman in the Garden
Step 3:
Take notes
Step 4:
Answer assignment questions. For
each question
make sure to
explain your answer
and support your points with evidence taken from the episode and additional sources
Step 5:
Answer the questions in paragraph format. Make sure to clearly indicate the number for
each question. When I ask what you ‘think’, I want an opinion. For these questions you can use
“I”.
Step 6:
Incorporate additional sources to triangulate your information. You can use class lecture
notes, peer reviewed journal articles (PRJA) and/or your textbook. You
MUST
use more than
one source (i.e. you cannot rely solely on lecture notes) and you
MUST
use at least one PRJA.
Step 7:
You must include in-text references and a “References Cited” section following APA for
all information from another source. You do not have to reference every time you refer to
information from the episode – but reference it at least once.
Questions
1.
What problem is the focus of this episode? In other words, what main issues is the forensic
anthropologist dealing with? (2 marks)
2.
Does Dr. Brennan consistently perform/complete work that fits with the role/duties of a
forensic anthropologist? Indicate
how
you came to this determination (i.e. how do her
actions fit with the job of a forensic anthropologist?). Make sure you are clear as to what the
role of a forensic anthropologist is and how she does/does not perform duties consistent
with that role. Use examples of both when she does, and when she does not do work that
fits the role of a forensic anthropologist. Be specific. (8 marks)
3.
Based on your knowledge of ethics and forensic anthropology, does the main forensic
anthropologist in the show perform her duties
ethically
? Provide examples, and for each
instance explain why it is/is not ethical. Support your points with references (i.e. AAPA and
CABA codes of ethics). (5 marks)
4.
Based on your knowledge of professionalism and
forensic anthropology specifically
,
does the main forensic anthropologist conduct herself with a high degree of
professionalism? Provide examples, and for each instance, explain why it is/is not
professional behaviour. Are there any other situations in which a forensic science expert
does/does not behave professionally? Provide examples and explain. (4 marks)
5. Do
you think,
overall, that the show accurately portrays the role, responsibilities and
behaviour of a forensic anthropologist? Provide examples and explain. (3 marks)
6. How do
you
think
the T.V. show affects the public’s perception of a forensic anthropologist?
Provide examples and explain why you think that way. (3 marks)
