CULTURAL SAFETY CHECKLIST Form CHCDIV002 Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety Issue date: 25/01/2023 Assessment Task 4 Page 2 of 3 Criteria 2 After completing the checklist, make recommendations to the organisation on how they can strengthen cultural safety (min 3 strategies) Recommendation 1 Make the services and information more accessible and known within the organisation and community. Not everyone has access to computers and how to use them. Recommendation 2 Celebrations and commemorations on more significant dates that are important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to make it a more inviting and culturally safe environment. Significant dates that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders celebrate and commemorate are National Sorry Day (Commemorate), anniversary of the apology from the Prime minister in 2008, National Reconciliation week from the 27 th of May- 3 rd of June, the third of June is also Mabo day. I want to collaborate with the community and the Elder’s and Aboriginal organisations on how they would like to celebrate and commemorate these significant days. Recommendation 3 Workshops and training for cultural awareness so that if a client came in and was in Sorry Business staff can respectfully and appropriately continue with the care of the client because they understand what they are going through and how things are done in their culture so that they aren’t upsetting the client by using the person’s name for example.
CULTURAL SAFETY CHECKLIST Form CHCDIV002 Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety Issue date: 25/01/2023 Assessment Task 4 Page 3 of 3 Criteria 3 What are at least two benefits for the organisation in documenting strategies and outcomes in cultural safety? So the organisation is welcoming and respectful and so that when staff and anyone visiting the organisation feels respected, feel safe and be able to contribute in discussions. Also feeling more comfortable to access support and services because they feel listened to and respected and you aren’t judging them on stereotypes. How can an organisation ensure that the cultural safety checklist will support a culturally safe and welcoming environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples By working collaboratively with communities and workers and ensuring that the environment is non- judgemental and free of stereotypes and a clear and understandable communication is always kept so everyone feels respected, safe and valued. Getting feedback is also essentially so you can change what works and doesn’t work and also add new services that the community feels they need more than others.
