Perspectives in Natural Sciences Sarah Baker Southern New Hampshire University Instructor: Jessica Bostic Date: June 15 th , 2023 PROJECT (7-1) Part 1: Natural Science Topic Exploration In this section, you will explore a natural science topic by selecting and analyzing a current news story. You will also reflect on your existing knowledge about the topic. Then, you will identify how research on the topic was conducted as described in the news story. 1. Describe the main idea discussed in your chosen news story. The introduction of several new illnesses may arise from animal populations relocate closer to humanity because of the global temperature on Earth changing. Observation and experimentation are two methods used to help scientists figure out what may be causing global warming in recent years, therefore the main idea of my news story, Improved air quality accelerates global warming in recent decades
2. Explain your prior and desired knowledge regarding the main idea in your news story. Due to animal movement and climatic change, I have little experience with how viruses propagate. Although while analyzing articles and absorbing a variety of information, I came to understand that global warming is a real issue which is likely to have a variety of adverse consequences, just rarely anything that severe. I’m interested in discovering a variety of topics about this issue, but my primary interest is how I might contribute to reducing the impacts of climate change. Surely there must be other possibilities other than traveling less frequently. 3. Identify a scientific approach that the scientist(s) used to research the topic. Observation as well as experimentation were the scientific methods used in my selected news story, Improved air quality accelerates global warming in recent decades. The scientists utilized data collected from NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites as their technique of observation. The testing process that was outlined in the news story included monitoring the cloud and aerosol pollution, as well as incoming and outgoing pollutants.
Part 2: Fundamental Questions About the Natural World In this section, you will identify questions you want to answer about your topic. Your finalized question will directly influence the hypothesis you write. Finally, you will consider how your opinions and experiences affected the focus of your hypothesis. 1. Finalize your research question related to the main idea in the news story you selected. What precisely is clean energy, and how much of it do we need to stop global warming? 2. Propose a hypothesis based on your finalized research question. If society switches to energy sources that are sustainable by 2040, such as energy from the sun, we can reduce the release of carbon dioxide by 10%.

3. Explain how your personal beliefs, assumptions, and values influenced how you approached writing your hypothesis. Since I personally don't know all that much about global warming, if anything, my beliefs and preconceived notions had a significant effect on my study topic. Even though most people are aware of renewable energy and how it might reduce global warming, I cannot say for sure. The solution to my research question is known to society, and it has already been put to the test. However, I am not sure of the solution to that question. I've gained some further knowledge on global warming and the significance of how severe the issue is throughout the course of the past week. I'm worried by it and want to understand more regarding the things that I can do as a member of society to aid in slowing down or even maybe stopping global warming. My study question was shaped by these notions and preconceptions. The idea that if we switch to sources of clean energy, we can reduce the release of carbon dioxide raises the question of how much renewable energy will be required to reduce the impacts of global warming. An answer to my finalized research question, provided by my hypothesis, proves the two concepts are connected and each one merely provides a solution to the other.
Part 3: Major Developments in the Natural Sciences In this section, you will research a significant advancement, discovery, or event that has affected how scientists research your topic. You will also explore the interrelationship between science and ethics. 1. Describe one major development in the natural sciences that has impacted how your topic was or may be studied. Technology for capturing, using, and storing carbon has made significant advancements in helping to lessen the effects of CO2 emissions. Seaweed feeding cows would be another innovation. Sounds absurd, huh? From a scientific perspective, the response is no. Cows produce large amounts of methane gas. Nearly two thirds of all methane emissions will be eliminated as a result. These two suggestions are only the beginning: many more have been made, such as insect-based eating habits, refreezing the poles, and environmentally friendly information centers, which may help us lessen or even reverse the impacts of the issues we are causing. These developments have an influence on everything we understand regarding this topic and how we research it since we realize that not everything has an almost unattainable answer: we can all make a difference by converting to more energy efficient lightbulbs.
2. Describe the contributions of a scientist (or group of scientists) who was involved in the major development relevant to your topic. There are a few of the scientists that are looking into issues such as global warming and who are trying to come up with an answer. The issue I selected is one that impacts everyone in the world, thus explaining why countless researchers are attempting to uncover answers. They include researchers from NASA, Georgetown University Medical Center, the United Kingdom, and many more nations. Technology for capturing, using, and storing carbon has made significant advancements in helping to lessen the effects of CO2 emissions, which would demonstrate the contribution of the scientists involved in the research regarding global warming. 3. Discuss how an ethical issue might impact research on your topic. How to manage the rights and obligations of a changing world is an ethical dilemma that is connected to the major topic of my news report. Humans have a moral obligation to future generations to choose morally responsible solutions to the global warming crisis.

Part 4: The Value of Studying the Natural Sciences In this section, you will reflect on the benefit of having a deeper understanding of the natural sciences to you personally and to society as a whole. 1. Explain how viewing the world through a scientific lens may influence your personal life. I can better understand the world thanks to my study of and interest in the natural sciences. Given how convoluted the world may be, we want someone who can explain it. Solving current issues can be aided by having a greater understanding of the globe. Additionally, it strengthens the analytical abilities I may use in my daily life. A typical personal situation or incident might provide the opportunity to test my ability to use my understanding of the natural sciences to apply answers and ideas. 2. Articulate how being a more scientifically informed citizen may affect your relationship with your community. Due to the analytical and critical thinking abilities they have developed, people who are more knowledgeable about science, may be able to make crucial decisions. Knowing the difference between information that is intended to enlighten society while deceiving others for personal advantage and profit allows one to act on a problem. By providing accurate information to the community's members, the individual may correct any inaccurate information that has been spread. This can encourage community members to seek out more reliable sources of information,
which can lead to better personal decisions being made by community members. 3. Discuss how being a more scientifically informed citizen may help you understand global contemporary issues. A population that is more literate might be helpful in addressing societal issues and global difficulties. To put it another way, educated persons can comprehend current issues and, as a result, decide how to improve their lives and pass down the same practices for future generations. This may provide a better framework for how we may all work together to address global concerns, or at the very least, it may help us develop an approach that focuses on enhancing our own and others' quality of life.
