Week 7 Review Worksheet Must be handed in on Blackboard by 12pm this Thursday Answer with True or False When an invasion of a native species is small and contained to one area, eradication is a feasible management option. True Burmese pythons ( Python bivittatus ), brought to Florida as pets, are doing extreme harm to the Florida Everglades as invasive species. This is a good example of one of the common modes of transport for invasive species. True Fill in the blank __ 1 __% of translocated species become invasive species. Negative impacts from the introduction of non-native species can happen at the ecosystem, community, species, and _____ Population ____ level. __ Propagule ____ pressure increases the chance of establishment of an invasive species with high number of release events, large number of individuals released, and/or large genetic diversity of released individuals. Circle or highlight the correct answer(s) Non-native/ invasive species are harmful to the economy, environment, and/or human health. Disinfecting diving equipment to prevent the spread of an invasive species is a type of eradication/ containment management. Answer the questions to the best of your ability Which location would legislators be more inclined to create laws around preventing the invasion of invasive species? What aspects of each of these places makes them more or less likely to support the establishment of invasive species? 1. A small town in the middle of the country with most of its economy coming from natural gas extraction, little tourism, with one large wildlife refuge. The first-choice deals with a large wildlife refuge which is very valuable in terms of ecological aspects plus the amount of wildlife that’s there. If an invasive species roams and makes its way into that refuge, there would be tons of negative impacts. Negative impacts include competition, community composition, environmental change both biotic and abiotic and lastly, extinction towards the species who’s already in that refuge. A lot of impact risk would also be increased as it would affect small or isolated populations and the potential of losing competition in terms of predators. This area would greatly increase support for the establishment of invasive species due to the large area which they can thrive in and increase their population. Economically, the emergence of invasive species can cause deterioration causing more of an issue when it comes to the economy especially that area relies on the natural gas extraction. Out of the two areas
presented, this one would gain more support towards the establishment of a law since there is more ecological value that needs protection. 2. A small island in which its economy is based mostly off tourism, has many endemic species with small ranges, most of the habitat is protected and intact. This area would be less likely to host invasive species, there is very little habitat and the fact that is small makes it less likely to even have an impact on the environment. There’s not a lot of factors that would really increase the population or attract invasive species. Plus, the fact that the habitat is protected and intact, conservationists or environmentalists would be on top of the issue, always monitoring the habitat. Watch the video on slide 19 of the non-native species ppt. Where did this invasive species come from? How was it released into the environment? Why is this species potentially dangerous/advantageous to the environment? What types of management methods did conservationists use to stop or prevent this species from spreading/establishing? The invasive species is native to tropical waters, but one strain was found in Germany where it thrived in colder environments. Though it is native to tropical waters, one strain made its way to the Mediterranean Sea as it might’ve been accidentally released it out by the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco while some differ and believed it was carried by the ocean currents. It multiplied itself rapidly into the environment, it started to release toxins that would keep the fishes of that ecosystem away. The issue with the Caulerpa is that even if a tiny piece breaks off, a whole new colony will grow. The more it spread, the more toxins it will release into the ecosystem driving fish away. Tarps were placed to prevent the spread of one colony here in the US, conservationists contained it before it could go crazy, they later dispersed chlorine into the tarp to eradicating Caulerpa. After reading the article on cats as invasive species and the mesopredator article, answer the following questions: What is a mesopredator release and what ecological impacts can it have? Can a mesopredator be an invasive or native species? Based on the information from both articles, how would you go about managing outdoor cats from a purely ecological perspective? Mesopredator release is a theory or explanation used to determine the difference between predators and mesopredator within the ecosystem or the association between apex predator declines and mesopredator overabundance using North American terrestrial mammals . It has many consequences for people and ecosystems, and the trade-offs and limitations of current efforts to manage predators. I think they could be considered both because the species could live within the natural while also causing problems by taking away prey towards other predators living within the habitat.
