READING RESPONSE 6 1. If you do not know already, please look up Glen Coulthard and Franz Fanon to find out a little bit about them. What according to Coulthard is the key lesson to be learned from Fanon’s work for Indigenous people in Canada? Glen Coulthard is a political theorist and author who has written much about Indigenous politics and decolonization. A key lesson from Fanon’s work for Indigenous people in Canada is the understanding of resistance and the significance of reclaiming one’s agency and autonomy in light of colonialism. Coulthard may assert that this lesson is relevant to Indigenous communities in Canada in their efforts to argue their rights, culture, and self-determination in the face of historical and ongoing colonial principles. 2. What, according to Friedland, is important about having an internal view of a legal tradition? How and why is this relevant to practical engagement with Indigenous legal traditions? Having an internal view of a legal tradition means to comprehend and interpret a legal system from within that culture or community, as opposed to viewing it through an external–mostly Western perspective. This way of thinking is relevant to the practical application of Indigenous legal traditions for several reasons. For example, recognizing and respecting the unique legislative system and traditions of Indigenous peoples is important. An internal understanding allows for a more accurate perception of how these traditions function within their cultural context.
