Module Two Question 1 Describe one of the beliefs and values of the Navajo as illustrated in your readings. The way the Navajo handle disputes comes from the belief that talking through problems makes them easier to resolve. This belief is practice by disputes being talked about with a select group of respected tribe members. Module Two Question 2 Describe one way in which the Navajo have incorporated their beliefs and values into the societal structure on the reservation since regaining some autonomy in the 1970's. In the past schools on reservations ignored Native American curriculums. They didn't teach students about native history, traditions, and heavily discouraged kids from speaking Navajo. Since reservations have regained some autonomy they have started bringing these topics back into the classroom. Module Two Question 3 What beliefs and values can be found in your culture? How do these beliefs and values influence your day-to-day life? I haven't always lived in Alaska. I moved to Anchorage from a very urban area and the way people value nature is very different. Activities like subsistence farming and gardening are common. This leads to a community that thrives off sharing food and resources freely. After living here for years I've come to see caring for the land as normal. Module Two Question 4 Adopt the social science perspective to create a list of questions about this issue. Write at least two questions each from the point of view of a psychologist, a sociologist, and an anthropologist. 1. A psychologist might ask if the ability to speak freely helps or hinders mental health. 2. Psychologists would ask if the viewing of censored materials had an effect on a person's biases.
3. A sociologist may ask how changes in cultural norms affect what kind of speech is acceptable. 4. A sociologist could ask how different groups view the importance of freedom of speech. 5. An anthropologist would ask how previous media has been censored and compare it to current censorship efforts. 6. Anthropologists would be interested in seeing what cultural changes happened before a rise in censorship efforts.
