American Family 112 DUE February 10, 2023 Worth 50 Points Directions: Complete “Gender Roles” Chart. After completing the chart, you are to answer the following questions based on your answers on the chart. Please make sure this is typed and that both sheets are turned in on the date due. 1. The families are returning to 1883 gender roles and the pioneer life of that era to ascertain whether they could survive a winter in the Montana territory/Boulder Valley. What would one advantage be of sticking to 1883 gender roles for these families? What would one disadvantage be? - An advantage of the gender roles would be how men made the decisions because they were the ones who watched over the family and were the only ones who could make decisions for the family, which was a benefit of the gender norms of 1883. This is a benefit since the women won’t have to decide what to do in the frontier, allowing her to focus only on taking care of the home and the children. The duty placed on women to grow the stock would be a drawback since they would struggle because they are more accustomed to contemporary foods. This is a drawback since they will have to slaughter the animals themselves and prepare them in a kitchen from 1883, which is different from a modern-day kitchen. 2. After viewing this episode, predict each family's survival (the families are the Brooks, the Clunes, and the Glenns). Explain. Would modern gender roles applied to this project change your predictions? Why or why not? - The Clunes family would have a fair chance of surviving because Gordon is the president of a sizable firm, giving him an advantage in terms of knowing how to manage situations while still shouldering the burden within the family. While being a stay-at-home mother, his wife Adrienne would be able to adapt to the responsibilities that women played in 1883 since she is already accustomed to them. The only issue I can see the family facing is that Adrienne, who is accustomed to current beauty standards and sanitation, finds it difficult to imagine not wearing cosmetics. They would likely work harder if current gender norms were implemented since they would have access to modern technologies and resources. The frontier gender roles are essentially the "American Family" philosophy, in which the
male is the primary provider of income, and the woman is considered as a source of support and assistance to the man, as the women were in 1883. If current gender roles were implemented, there would be little change. 3. The children of these families experience dramatic changes in their daily lives. Choose one child from the episode/project and describe their assimilation or lack of assimilation into 1883 gender roles. - Justin was able to adapt to life on the frontier while also learning from the difficulties that children his age experienced, such as managing the stock, chopping food, and assisting the family. Justin's biggest difficulty was adjusting to life without contemporary technology because he is used to using his Nintendo, which wasn't around in 1883. He was eager to learn about the difficulties encountered and was interested in the journey, so out of all the children, he was the one who genuinely wanted to learn, and I also noted his need to know. When compared to Karen's daughter, who insisted on donning cosmetics because she felt it made her seem younger and removed clothing from 1883, it is clear how entitled and disgusting today's kids have grown to be.
