Scaffolding and Improved Strategies and Practices Cornelius Cata 9-25-2023 Strategies What does this strategy look like in the classroom? How will this strategy affect and improve your planning and instruction process? How will this strategy affect student learning? What are the likely effects from each on the English learning of students? Scaffolding Learning a new note on the clarinet, flute, or trumpet. I will have fingering charts on the board with explaining the new note, and then I will demonstrate the note on each instrument. Students will be able to play this note using a beautiful tone throughout the music excerpts that will be playing incorporating this new note. Students will connect prior knowledge of their instrument and gaining new knowledge by moving on to deeper musical concepts and repertoire. Even students that are struggling in English will be able to be accommodated using this strategy of modeling. Team teaching Students will be working in sectionals within their family of instruments to develop certain concepts and techniques There will be a sectional leader or mentor that will check with me for instruction and feedback on the materials that will be presented, and students will be able to work in smaller groups for a few minutes with better efficiency. Students will be able to work faster and be able to fix musical problems easier in a section where only their instruments are playing. Some English learners that are shy or uncomfortable in bigger groups will be able to participate in these sections and ask questions or get help. Grouping strategies Very similar to sectionals, but these group strategies will be placed in sections based on the level of musicianship to achieve a better balance of musical level. There will be time carved during rehearsal days in which these groups will work on specific benchmarks and target parts of a repertoire for the ensemble to improve sound. Each student has an opportunity to expend their knowledge in this group setups and offer help to other students that might be struggling. There will be vocabulary and terminology that will be shared in these group settings and students, whether they are English speaking or English learners, will be able to benefit in smaller groups. Language/print rich environment. There will be signs, labels, fingering charts, circle of fourths displayed throughout the classrooms walls for students to gain musical knowledge These strategies can be utilized by each student for musical enrichment, but also to transfer knowledge unto their performance and music theory. Through repetition and visual awareness, students will be able to be exposed and acquainted with these concepts daily. English learners will transfer their primary language knowledge to learning these concepts and terms in English, but also in other languages such as Italian and Latin. Realia We will be using baking recipes to explain sound balance Students will be able to transfer prior knowledge and life Students will be more likely able to relate to other similar English learners will be able to use prior knowledge to learn

Physical environment The classroom environment is very important to me and the students. Having a clean, safe, and welcoming environment that lacks clutter is very important to the success of the class. I have students get involved in the process of maintaining a beautiful physical environment of our classroom, whether we set up the chairs and align them to look organized and professional, or clean up the room after we have finished a rehearsal. I believe that learning process is much easier and more productive in a clean and inviting environment versus one that is filthy, messy causing anxiety and discomfort. A clean physical environment is very supportive to the process of rehearsing and making beautiful music, but also for any learner, including English learners having a clean environment to facilitate a medium for the brain to comprehend and learn everything that is presented in the classroom. Peer tutoring We do this all the time in our mentoring time. Advanced musicians help and disciple beginning musicians, whether by learning new notes, musical vocabulary, or challenging passages, in one-on-one tutoring or sectionals. This strategy is part of our daily routine, so my lesson planning incorporates this sectional time as well, but the benefits are great, and the overall sound and musical level of the group is improving daily. I have 10-15 minutes allocated for peer tutoring and sectionals where students work on specific music. The result is great and very productive because students get help in smaller groups and spend the time on challenges, by improving their weaknesses. English learners are paired with someone that can help them in their language or someone that is knowledgeable enough to help them in their vocabulary and comprehension of the music and the musical terminology that we are covering. Technology We use technology all the time in our classrooms for music theory, musical definitions and vocabulary, ear training and composition. Students work twice a week on these websites/apps and some of the work is given as homework at Since students are exposed to technology on regular basis, it s also very important that we incorporate technology with a grain of salt and not overuse it. We use technology in our music classes to improve our ability to transfer the information into Students will be able to have hands on instruction and help through technology even at home, going over recordings, videos and music applications that will help their comprehension and retention much faster and easier. With technology applications and tools, English learners can use translation apps and tools to further their knowledge and comprehension. They can also go back and forth between English and their primary language and connect content material. Music students have

Formative and summative assessments We have formative and summative assessments on ongoing basis and instantly in our music classes. If a student plays a wrong note or rhythm, we address and fix that right away and on the spot. In music we strive for 100% results all the time. 90% is not enough for a great performance, when you miss just a few notes. Therefore, assessments and adjustments are critical for music classes, and they are part of our daily instruction. Students get to know their results, scores, or abilities daily because they get instant feedback from the teacher and they can improve their music, scores, and tests daily. English learners can be assessed on their music comprehension, whether vocabulary or performance just like any other student and they get to move at the same pace with the entire class. Family/community involvement Family involvement and support is crucial for the music students, and especially for the performing groups since we get to share our results with the community. Practice charts are a great way to keep the family involved in making sure that the students are practicing and working at home as well. Students and parents get contracts and practice charts, emails, forms, and flyers that are great communication tools with the family and there is a grading portion that involves tracking the communication with the families at home. Students will be held accountable by their parents to put in the time and have no excuses when it comes to time commitment at home, but also the grading as a tool of assessment and accountability. Family involvement is also very important for the English learners because the support at home and the community is beneficial in accommodating to a new environment and also getting emotional and academic help when needed.
