Langlitz Questions 1. What is it about, empirically: what is being studied as the object, by the anthropologist, in this short excerpt? where is it located? what is the scale- nation, region, city, institution, person, discourse, text?, (50 words) In this except, Langlitz is giving his account of his own experience that he underwent as a participant at Franz Vollenwieder’s lab in Zurich, Switzerland with psilocybin. In this excerpt, he describes observations he makes about the scientist and psychedelic test subjects themselves, their experiences and their reasons for researching (which the researchers do not disclose). His insights about the experiments raise questions about scientific objectivity and subjectivity, which Langlitz brings up in relation to the work of other academics (Haraway, Daston and Halison, etc.). 2. What methods were used/ how was data generated? How do these particular kinds of methods allow the anthropologist (not the scientists) to inquire about particular things? Are there other methods that you could envision that would speak to the same kinds of questions? (50-75 words) The excerpt is an account of Langlitz’s experiences, so his observational and participant methods and the resulting data are taken from his own experience (his verbal communication and interactions). He supports his opinions by citing other academics and creates a dialogue with his readers. The question that was apparent in this excerpt was subject-object dichotomy, as well as a difficulty in psychopharmacological research: controlling the efficacy of the drugs. Langlitz discusses the possibility of culture controls and fieldwork in place of randomized, blind placebo trials. Perhaps using some form of a comparative method to observe multiple labs could lead him to arrive at the same inquiry.
