Scientific Method In Our Daily Lives
By now it is safe to say that we all know what the Scientific Method is and how it is
applied in everyday life. But, the majority of people have not put any thought into how it applies
in their
own personal life and how it is used without being consciously aware of it. The
Scientific Method plays a huge role in our life and it is very important. The Scientific Method
holds such high value because it is based on observation, test a hypothesis, predictions,
test and
conclude the Scientific Method with the hypotheses being supported or rejected. A recurring
issue I have that tests the Scientific Method and I am working with is with my son's behavior and
the outcome of changing several factors that could help improve the outcome of his tantrums.
The first step we come across in the Scientific Method is the observation aspect of the
process. We have to observe what the issue is and tackle the problem from there. The observation
gives us a clear idea of what the issue is and what we have to work with in order to create a
proper guide to resolving the matter. In my case, my son’s behavior is something that I deal with
daily and I observe on creating a solution in helping him regulate his emotions and creating a
healthier balance of outbursts and tantrums. The observation stage is the exploration of the issue
and ultimately as mentioned in our textbook “Evaluating data is not always clear-cut, and results
are sometimes surprising or inconclusive. (Shook, 2023, Chapter 1, Paragraph 52). Observation
is overall a key component in identifying a problem and creating all possible solutions by testing
possible solutions and circling back and trying different approaches in each step of the process.
Scientific Method In Our Daily Lives
When an observation is made we then create what is called a Hypothesis. This part is
essentially the butter to our bread. In this stage we begin to question why we experience certain
behaviors, repetitive behaviors, certain outcomes etc. For me this is the stage where I began
questioning why my son exhibits certain patterns in his behavior. Why is this happening? How
can I resolve this? Where do I begin to help him? We start to draw conclusions. This is our
starting point in going further with our observation. For me this is the step where I truly start
digging into questions on where it is. I can create new habits/ patterns to help my son with his
emotional regulation for his outbursts. I start to map out mentally changing his routine, changing
his diet, I start to create solutions on where the behaviors could possibly be coming from.

We then begin to look at the predictions in the Scientific Method. We start to put
into action those “What if’s' ' We begin to apply those changes in our map of ideas. It
starts off primarily as a presumption and start to draw mental conclusions to the possible
solution in those hypothesis staged questions. We start to really dig deeper into what is
being proposed. The predictions I have with my son's behavior are really being mapped
out. “If I were to change his sleeping routine will he sleep longer and have a better
increase in his daily emotions?'' We start to draw possible solutions and create more
“What If’s” in hopes to change the outcome. “What if I change the amount of time I
allow my son to watch tv during the week?” Ultimately the predictions we create are all
potential solutions in our mind because we are hoping once tested they come to fruition.
Scientific Method In Our Daily Lives
We have now reached the part where it all comes together into our explorations and
pieces together everything from beginning to end. Although the process is not linear and circles
back from beginning to end, middle to end end to beginning etc. This is all a process of finding
what we think will work and circling back to possible areas in which we think could potentially
fix that trial and error from our observations when we begin to test the “What if’s?”. Shook
mentions that Scientific Hypothesis should always generate expectations that are testable in order
to find the best explanation (Chapter 1, Paragraph 45). Creating reasonable Hypothesis in the
beginning helps create a reasonable test in the observation of finding a real solution. My son has
displayed much more adequate comprehension and understanding on the outcome of his
behaviors by displaying that he does not get his way when wrong is done. I have tested many
theories such as changing diet, Television time, etc. This is where we begin to map new
predictions and start to see if the process we have going is potentially working or being
dismissed.
For me personally, limiting television time has worked and my predictions were
accurate. In this stage of the Method where it either supports or rejects your process it did take
trial and error because not all possible solutions have worked and I have had to go back in the
process of this Scientific Method to see where the possible failure could have came from, Where
things could be altered or changed to fit a better test theory etc. It all trickles down to a good trial
and error in a way that really presents a valid case. It is also okay to not be successful in your
theory the first time around, that is really what the Scientific Method is all about at the start and

end of the day. Finding what best helps and fits one's need will not always be the same
process for all or even work the first time around and will create room for more observation and
new hypotheses and theories to map out and work on a new way to test those predictions.
