Background We are comparing two different types of fish in the same lake that both appear to be sticklebacks, but have different physical features.
Field Study Hypothesis: Benthic and limnetic sticklebacks are the same species Methods: We would go to a lake and catch both types of fish using a fishing net and collecting them in a big bucket. We would try and catch fish with and without pelvic spines, in varying sizes and color. We would observe the physical features, make a graph of the observable physical traits of all fish, and compare and contrast morphological traits of all fish to see if they are related. Results and discussion: Based on the data set, we found that the benthic, limnetic, and hybrid all differ in physical features (average body depth, average number of gill rakers, average jaw width, etc.)

Laboratory Experiment Hypothesis: Benthic and limnetic sticklebacks are the same species Methods: We would breed the fish, observe whether the offspring is viable and fertile, then test the fertility of those offspring by breeding those together. Results and discussion: The data does in fact address our hypothesis as a result of morphological traits being included. In addition, a graph that includes mating preferences that shows hybrid viability. From the data we are able to conclude that hybrids would in fact be viable because they show a 95-97% survival rate. The two fish species have many morphological differences, and the morphological concept would deem them different; according to the biological concept, they are deemed the same species.
