In a post of at least 250 words, describe the differences between human rights, human values, and human dignity. Fluehr-Lobban shares that for decades she found herself accepting FGM from cultural relativist position, while at the same time criticizing Western practices that were harmful to women and children, such as breast implants or instances of domestic violence. i. Have you ever noticed yourself applying a double standard to critique some practices that are considered harmful and defend others? ii. Are there circumstances where such as standard seems appropriate? iii. Human rights is standard treatment inevitable rights given to an individual and involves human dignity. Human dignity is an individual person whose dignity deserves our respect regardless of ones power or limits may be and related to ones self worth. Human values refers to as social action between others who demonstrate their beliefs in living the good life. Human rights, dignity, and values all differ in exact definitions, but all play a role and reflects on each other. In our society we live in today, double standards is a problem we run into daily. Especially being a women, I feel like we experience it more than others. I personally have experienced double standards and it’s not uncommon which is sad. Women are looked at completely different than men, such as getting judged by our clothes. If we wear something that is very modest, we may be looked at as ugly. But then we wear top that shows our belly’s and shorts that show our legs then we may be a “whore”. Especially in this society the clothing easily puts a label on you and determines “who you are”. If a man wears a shorts and a tank top, or maybe fully clothed in sweatpants and a sweatshirt, he is looked at the exact same man without any labels or names. That’s double standards that most women deal with everyday. I believe some the knowledge of cultural specificity and knowing basic human rights can be extremely useful in decreases the society using double standards. I thinking knowing the meanings of human rights, dignity, and values can impact and change the way people think.
