Introduction to the Black Experience Fall 2023 Annotated Bibliography Assignment Background: For our class, you will be producing an extensive annotated bibliography. The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to function as a repository for your research. You can think about it as a document that translates the work of research into a physical document that will allow me to grade all of what would otherwise be self-directed, private labor. Assignment Directions: You each get to propose your own topic. You should be able to explain how your topic relates to our course’s topic—the black experience. You can, of course, base your topic around material we have discussed together as a class, but you can also choose any relevant topic that you are interested in researching. Keep in mind that for this assignment most of what you will be doing is learning what scholars, critics, and artists have said about your topic. You should email your proposed topic to me by midnight on Sunday, October 8 th , so that I can share your topics with Allison Symulevich prior to our workshop with her on Thursday, October 12 th . Your bibliography should include a minimum of 10 sources and 7 of your 10 sources should either be peer-reviewed articles or books published by academic presses. Feel free to reach out to me or asking one of the Research Librarians if you need any help determining if a source meets these criteria. Once you have found your 10 sources, you will need to review them to produce the following annotations: Write a brief paragraph (~2-4 sentences) summarizing the source. Try to identify the text’s central claims, its intended audience, the stakes of the work that it is doing, and any other information that you think might be helpful in giving yourself, or someone else, a broad overview of the text. Write a brief paragraph (~2-4 sentences) assessing each source. In this paragraph you are trying to decide if you find the source to be trustworthy. You might also think about this as a chance to consider the ways you find the source to be biased. You might further consider if the source claims to be objective or if it positions itself as making subjective claims and how that affects your reading of this source. Write a brief paragraph (~2-4 sentences) in which you reflect on the source. In this paragraph you are being asked to explain how relevant you think this source will be for your own purposes. Do you think that it is something you might want to engage with or include in a research paper you would write about your topic? Assignment Guidelines: Your annotated bibliography must adhere to the following style guidelines: It must be written in English It must be in 12-point, Times New Roman font It must have 1-inch margins To identify your assignment, you must only include the following three items: You must include a header featuring your name Your bibliographic entries must be formatted consistently in the style of your choice (MLA, Chicago, APA, etc.).
Assignment Due Dates: Your proposed topic is due to me midnight on Sunday, October 8 th . You should send me your proposed topics by email or on Canvas. Your annotated bibliography is due by midnight on Wednesday, November 15 th on Canvas. Reminders: Above all else, annotated bibliographies are bibliographies. You are going to be expected to maintain accurate bibliographic entries for any materials you wish to include in your annotated bibliography. If you were going to use the research you are documenting in your annotated bibliography in a research paper, then keeping track of this information would make the citational process easier. The other major aspect of an annotated bibliography is the processing and assessment of textual information. This means three things. First, for this assignment you will find sources that you think might be relevant to your research topic. I have scheduled one class session as focused exclusively on time for you to wrap up your research for this assignment in the library, on Tuesday, November 14 th , but you will need to spend time outside of class time conducting research for this assignment. Keep in mind that you should include any sources that you end up reviewing in your annotated bibliography so that you have a clear sense of everything you have looked at during the research process. Second, you will be developing your skills evaluating the credibility of individual sources. This will include considering who created the source, where the source was published, if the source went through a review process before being published, the kinds of evidence referenced in each source, and if you would classify your source as either a primary, secondary, or tertiary source, among other possible considerations. You will be supported in developing these skills based on materials we will cover in class together as well as through a workshop with the African Studies Research Librarian at USF Allison Symulevich in class on Thursday, October 12 th . Third, once you have found a source you think might be promising, you then must take the further step of reading, listening, or watching that source and then evaluating how the source might, or might not, fit into a research paper you could write about this subject. The annotation process is meant to help you analyze the sources you have discovered while also allowing you to maintain a clear set of records about the texts you have found so that you can easily return to the ones you found most relevant and interesting for your work. Finally, I want to remind you that research never happens in a vacuum. Doing research can feel like very individual, isolating work, but you can and should ask for support and assistance in the research process. This might mean asking me for help, but it also means asking for support from the research librarians at the USF Libraries and from each other.
