Thanks Robyn.  I had emailed Barbara and also pointed out that she needs adobe reader to open a pdf file.  That is actually a free download at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html in case anyone else is having problems. Respond to this note Response Title: Re: "An Incidental Finding" Author: Dianna Marie Armstrong Date: Saturday, 11/22/2008 22:17 EST Body: The ethical stance the anthropologist had to face was that after identifying the young victim she noticed the teeth had Mongoloid characteristics even thought the girl was described as caucasion. In any case the dental patterns match exactly and she was identified. In the end the anthropologist discovered that the mother had indeed been involved with a Mexican man before marrying her husband the little girl's dad. She was faced with telling the father about the real father after he ended up sitting in her presentation to police. She decided not to tell him in order to cause him no pain. I think this was the best decision. Knowing was not going to bring the little girl back. It was apparent that the dad and girl were very close. There was absolutely no reason to scar his memories of her by telling him she was not really his child. That would have only crushed him even more. I think by disclosing this information would have made him bitter and caused more harm than good. The decision to tell him would have also caused unwarranted trouble between him and his wife who had already suffered enough with the knowledge of his, their little girl, being murdered the way she had. Good observation, Dianna!
Respond to this note Response Title: Re: "An Incidental Finding" Author: Sherrie Leshell Gilliam Date: Sunday, 11/23/2008 0:34 EST Body: The stance the Forensic Anthropologist took in this particular case was the correct one in my opinion. The findings of the remains had already been discussed with the father and I assume he was told how she was killed as well. To the Anthropologist and investigators, it was apparent he was devastated by the news of his daughter. So what good would it have done to inform him that the little girl was not his biological daughter? None! The news would have only cause him more mental anguish and suffering for the rest of his life. He suffered enough up to that point of being informed, why add more pain and suffering to him. As the article presented, it was an incidental finding and one that would have not made any difference to the father what-so-ever. It would have caused more torment to him and his life as well as his marriage had the Forensic Anthropologist dicided to disclose the information. All in all, I think the right decision was made in this particular case. It would be the mother's decision to tell the man that he was not the girl's biological father. Respond to this note
