Anth168 Spring 2024 Homework #2 Name:______________________ TA or section #:_____________________________(10pts+5 bonus pts) SHOW ALL YOUR WORK FOR PARTIAL CREDIT Due in class Thursday 2/8. Please turn it in hard-copy to your TA at the beginning of class. 1. A new species of Koalas (Western Pygmy Koalas) was discovered in the remote western outback of Australia. Thought to have been extinct for over 11,000 years, a population was found in a remote hidden valley 900 miles northeast of Kalgoori. These tiny Koalas have a sandy color and long beards. Using DNA from their poop, scientists were able to genotype 110 Western Pygmy Koalas. They found the following gentotype frequencies KK: 45 Kk: 40 kk: 25 Answer the following questions: a. (1 pts) find p) and q b. (1 pts) estimate HWE genotype freqs for the next generation c. (2 pts) test to see if this population is in HWE with Chi Square test, with one degree of freedom. Use the chart on the next page to find the P-value and say whether or not you accept the null hypothesis that the population is in Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium. d. (2 pts) Name four different things that could cause a population to not be in HWE. 2. (4 pts) What are the possible inheritance patterns for the following pedigree? Say whether or not it COULD be each of the following (and why): Autosomal Dominant, Autosomal Recessive, X-Linked Dominant, X-linked recessive, Y-linked, and Mitochondrial. If it cannot be one of these patterns you must say why not and be VERY specific . Say which individual violated the rule for that inheritance pattern. Say it for each inheritance pattern. You could circle it or drawn an arrow to it. You do not need to say why it could be one. Just say “yes it could be”. You should have SIX answers below next to a-f. a) autosomal dominant b) autosomal recessive c) x-linked dominant d) x-linked recessive e) y-linked f) mitochondrial
(4 pts) Extra Credit In one population of Armenian Stoats, there is a rare recessive mutation that makes some of these animals have jet- black hair over their whole bodies (instead of the usual tan color). The normal Armenian Stoats have tan fur. TT and Tt make normal tan colored stoats and tt makes the jet-black colord stoats. Scientists were able to observe the stoats from a distance and count how many were tan and how many were black. They documented 160 tan Armenian Stoats and 25 jet-black Armenian Stoats in their survey. Assuming the population is in Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium, what percentage of the stoats with the tan phenotype ( TT and Tt ) are heterozygotes and carry the jet- black ( t ) allele? This would be Nn/(NN+Nn) or the number of heterozygotes expected by HWE over the total number of tan animals. how ALL YOU WORK for partial credit .
