Teacher: Good morning, class! My name is Ms. Soto and today we have something important to talk about - water pollution. It's a big word, but we'll break it down so that it's easy to understand. Before we start does anyone know what water pollution might be. Student 1: It means the water is getting dirty. Teacher: Excellent! Water pollution is when our water, like the water in rivers, lakes, and oceans, gets dirty or messed up. Water pollution occurs when there is a presence of solid, liquid, and gaseous contaminants. For example, trash and oil. This causes our water to change how good it is, and it can be very bad for humans and organisms that live in our waters. Student 2: I didn’t know that water could be bad for us. Teacher: If we don’t take care of our water, it can be very harmful to us and the creatures that live in it. As humans there is a chance that we could die from water pollution. Scientist have proven it in fact has killed a rough estimate of about 1.8 million individuals back in 2015. Contaminated water can make us very sick. For some people, especially the homeless or those who live in low-income communities, they are more likely to get sick because their homes are closer to the most polluted water areas. Student 1: Oh wow, we definitely need to take care of our water. Student 2: Yes, we do. Who knew water could get you sick? Student 3: What else can happen from water pollution Ms. Soto? Teacher: Great question when we have water pollution the creates in that ecosystem are affected. One of the ways water pollution affects our oceans is by threatening marine debris. Debris is like garbage that ends up in the water, and it can be really dangerous. Imagine how sad it would be if you went to the beach and saw animals in trouble.
Student 1: That would be really sad. How does debris put the animals in trouble? Teacher: I love the participation, that is an excellent question! Marine debris can cause animals to suffer in many ways. Some animals might accidentally eat plastic bags and soda cans thinking about their food. This makes them sick and hungry because they can't digest these things. Others might get tangled in debris like fishing nets and ropes, which can lead to strangulation. It's just like when you get tangled up in something, but for these animals, it can be life-threatening. Student 3: How do we help the animals? Can we even help the animals? Teacher: Of course, we can all help! We can reduce, reuse, and recycle to make less trash. We can also pick up litter when we see it, especially at the beach. And remember to use fewer plastic items because they're one of the big problems with water pollution. Student 3: I am definitely going to do that! Student 1: Me too, I want to help all the animals. Teacher: That’s great, we should all do our part to not only help the animals but to keep our water clean. Now we are going to watch a quick video. Everyone please pay attention. *Plays video* Teacher: So class, what did we learn from our video? Student 1: Water pollution can come from nature like volcanoes. Student 2: It can also come from when we leave trash and from oil. Student 3: Water pollution can cause diseases and can kill the animals in the ocean, Teacher: Good job everyone. It’s part of our job to help take care of our water. Not only to protect us but to protect the ocean and the creatures that live in it. Now, is everyone ready for an activity?
All students: YESSS! Teacher: On your desks you will find the following items: water, a container, vegetable oil, cocoa, ocean life toys, a scrub brush, dish soap, sand, seashells, rocks, and different types of trash such as, balloons, feathers, and a plastic bag. The first thing we will do is decorate our container like the ocean, so we will only place all things that belong to the ocean into the container. Next, we are slowly going to add in our water. I want everyone to observe and write down how your water looks right now. We are now going to add sample cups of oil and cocoa into our water. Student 3: But Ms. Soto, isn’t that going to mess up our water? Teacher: Great question, let’s go ahead and add it to the water and observe what happens, be sure to write down your observations. Last step, we are going to add our trash into the water. Please be sure to write down your observations. Student 1: Ms. Soto, our water is dirty. Teacher: Excellent observation, the water is now dirty. This is what happens to the ocean when water pollution happens. Now it’s time to do our part, we have to clean up our pollution and try to get our oceans back to normal. Student 2: I took out all the trash, but the oil and cocoa are mixed in with the water. Teacher: That is correct, even if we remove all the trash sometimes the water still won’t be cleaned because of oil spills. So, we have to remove our creatures and clean them to put them into a better and

cleaner environment. Let’s go ahead and do that now by using our soap and scrub brush. When you are finished place your animals on paper towels and raise your hand. *Class raises hand* Teacher: You all did an excellent job. I’m proud of the participation we had today. Now remember class, we all have our part to play. The Earth is our home, and the water is part of it. We must keep our water clean. Now let’s all go ahead and line up because it’s time for lunch.
